Body pillows?

It's getting to the point where my breasts and belly get upset if I try to sleep on my stomach - and as I usually sleep on my stomach most of the night, sleeping has become a little difficult!

So, I'm looking into body pillows. However, I'm one of those oddballs who rarely buys stuff new, and when I do, I try to consider the environment & the workers with every purchase. Can anyone recommend a good organic, fair-trade produced body pillow? Or, does anyone have suggestions of a way to purchase a good, clean, body pillow second-hand?

Geesh. I wish I could help. I don't think you are weird - we buy most every thing second hand here because I like waiting for the recalls to roll out, and also being a decent steward of the earth. With something like a body pillow though, I don't think I would go second hand. Bed bugs are really becoming epidemic and I would be suspicious of why a perfectly good body pillow was in a second hand store, iykwim.

Did a quick google. Lots of selection for organic body pillows. http://www.northernnaturals.com/body_pillows.html

Craigslist has snoogles and other maternity-related body pillows, at least in my area.  They have their own separate cover that is washable, but I didn't consider the bed bug scenario.  These are maternity-only pillows, so I wouldn't question as much why it is being sold, since the owner probably already had their baby.  But the bed bug thing might be scary...

Maternity pillow I would be fine with it, thats true Janelle..

Honestly, with a little skill with a sewing machine, it'd probably be cheaper to make one than to buy an organic one.  They tend to run in the $80-100+ range from what I've seen.

You can fill it with fiberfill, raw wool, organic cotton fill, bamboo fill, buckwheat hulls, field corn, etc.  And a simple casing of muslin, and a pillow case of muslin (2 rectangles each) are all you really need.

I really want a new one, but I can't justify the cost of an organic one, so I'll skip it until I can get my hands on some organic cotton stuffing.

I thought about making a body pillow by sewing a double length pillow case for two regular pillows. I never got around to it an eventually found a body pillow I liked at Target. It is on my DD's bed now so its not like it was just for the pregnancy.

You might have a cheaper/easier time finding two organic standard pillows than one big body pillow.

Thank you, everyone, for the suggestions!

Onemoreontheway & Janellody - yes, I am terrified of the concept of bedbugs! Especially after I brought one home in my backpack from a hostel stay.yikes.gif Fortunately, I had left all of DH's & my stuff from the trip outside as a precaution (DH used to make fun of me for insisting on doing that - no longer!), and we didn't get infested. Anyway, that's why I'm wary of buying anything with fabric or stuffing used that I can't throw in the washer. That is a good idea to look specifically for maternity pillows, though - I will look into that.

Cristeen - I love to sew, and making one might make more sense then buying one. I know that organic filling & fabric can be quite expensive too, but it still might be cheaper that way - maybe if I order the stuffing in bulk.

Masel - sewing together two standard pillows is a great idea, too - might also be cheaper than buying one big body pillow.

Again, thank you so much for all of the suggestions, ladies!
