milk donations

Thanks for posting this. I hope someone can help out.

I'd love to do this, but as someone who has lived in Europe for more than 6 months in the 80's and 90's, I'm ineligible because I'm a potential carrier of CJD. It really bugs me b/c I make more than enough milk and I'd love to share the wealth for a good cause. They could screen for prions, but so far that doesn't seem to have crossed their minds (or anyone else's: I can't donate blood, stem cells, etc);

I don't think I'm eligible either because I take Zoloft. I'll look into it though.

If I didn't have to take an arsenal of galactagogues just to feed my babe I would totally help out.

I was just thinking about this, as I've been accumulating quite a freezer stash. I seem to pump significantly more at work than River eats while I'm gone.

The website says that it's 100oz minimum, I definitely can't commit to that. Do any of you have any experience with informal milk sharing? I've heard of a few Facebook groups but don't know much about it.

I was told a hospital over the hill from us will come and pick it up for you. Have not looked into details yet. I was hoping to phase out the earliest milk before it expires that way. It is deep in our freezer but I was still going to count the 6 months as the date to use them conservatively instead of 12 months LLL says is acceptable. Does that sound fair?

not sure if I can commit to 100oz min either, if they are hurting for milk, shouldn't every oz count?

Cat, I saw some webpages where people offer their milk etc. but seemed more like nanny sites since they were charging people. While I respect their choices, the milk is not mine to sell and I am sure Sofie would rather have her milk not be traded...so that was the end of me trying to find informal sites. If you happen to stumble upon one, please do share.

human milk 4 human babies is more informal in accepting donations and doesn't make a profit off the milk.

It's another alternative

Me too! I definitely would love to help, but that's just too much.

Thanks for the info, I contacted a milk bank in Texas (the closest one to me) and had a phone screening today.  If you're shipping it, the minimum goes up to 200oz!  However they will accept milk that has been frozen for up to 4 months.  I started pumping and freezing in October and have about 75oz now so I'm hoping to get the 200oz before the end of January.  We'll see.
