Safest vehicle?

What do you think is the safest vehicle that we could by for our family.

We have 3 children and currently drive a VW jetta.  We would consider either car, a van, or an SUV.  We are open to it all.  I have read many safety ratings comparing vehicles within classes, but never between vehicle classes.
