l had giant clog on my left side last week, lasted 3 days. After that i find that i m pumping half of what i get from my right side. Left side has been producing 2/3 of the right side before this. I am trying not to panic. any one with a similar experience? does it come back?
is it possible to loose production on one side?
I have been noticing less production on my left side too, ever since I started pumping. Once I saw that, I paid more attention to how DS was nursing, and I realized that he spends less time on that side than my right. So I've been trying to start him out on the left side first more often and have been doing breast compressions after he's been eating for a while. I know it's normal to have less output on one side, so as long as it doesn't drop any more, I'm just going to keep doing that. But if it gets lower, I might start pumping on that side only 1 more time per day.
I'd second Tina's statement that it's normal to have one side that produces less. My right side is the under-achiever in production, even though I nurse DD more on that side. It's funny, because it was also the under-producer with DS. But he preferred the left side, and I nursed him more often on that side because of it. DD doesn't really like nursing on the left, so she almost never comfort nurses on that side. Yet it still produces more milk.
I wouldn't be too concerned about it as long as it's still producing something. Technically you can nurse with just one breast. But if it is really causing you worry, I'd say to take some milk herbs for a day or two and be cautious to nurse as much as you can on the low flow side.
Lefty is my super producer. If you think it's related to that clog, maybe pump an extra session for a few days (on that side) and see if you can catch up to that demand. Also, it's normal around this time for oversupply to level out. You might not get as much as you used to over all. Don't let that frighten you, either.
Thank you so much ladies,
adding an extra session for the lefty may be the way to go, i will start that. I am worried b/c this started with the clogging on that side, and my mother had to stop nursing me at 4 months since she was not producing enough (the details are vague)..so I am on the look out as we approach that mark I guess.
I have been scared to go crazy on taking fenugreek since my right side is producing more than enough (at least from what I can see pumping). If it results in the lefty recover, I guess that would be worth it too.
