handmade changing mat (not for traveling)

Hi everybody, I just did some research about changing mats, and the results were pretty frightening. It turn out that they are loaded with toxic stuff, and the ones that are not are very, very expensive. I have like this millions of fabric stashes lying around here, and I thought about sewing my own mat,

I guess, that it wouldn´t be too difficult, but I am wondering about how I get the mat soft enough. I have a couple of felted sweaters, and some wool filling lying around, do you think I could use that? 

I am not too comfortable to use foam - first I don´t really know how toxic that would be, second I´d like to use stuff I already have. 

do you think that a combination of felted wool plus the wool filling would be soft enough? 

I am planning to cover it with cotton than, and have a towel or something like this above the cotton, for blow-outs. It probably would not be washable with the wool filling, but it could work with the felted wool, wouldn´t it? 

What would you use?

I used to just change them on an old towel when my kids were in diapers.

The changing table is wooden, I guess that would be too hard - maybe not though. I have back issues, therefor I need the changing table. Did you have the towel on a changing table or on your bed or something?

on the bed, on the floor, on a table, on any surface really. I found a bath towel folded in two was soft enough.

I use a piece of rubber sheeting (you may not be comfortable with that); it's not padded at all. You could do something with a little bit of padding (like quilt thickness) to make it softer, but that should be enough. I think the deep padding on changing tables is more for keeping the baby from rolling.
