Night weaning for a 2 year old??

I have tried night weaning my 2 year old for a couple of weeks and after 2 weeks he was still crying and wanting to nurse as much as when we started. Of course I came to the conclusion that he was not ready.

I am just wondering how long it can go on like that?

I have no limits as of how long I want to nurse him right now but I would really like to have better nights.

He is #4, I feel like I have not had a good night sleep forever.

Are good nights sleep over rated?

He never sleeps more than 4 hours at the time, that is the longest stretch, after that it is pretty much every 2 hours at night.

I have no problem during the day, he actually doesn't nurse that much. He does drive me nuts pulling my hair, squirming, the usual, but I can live w/that. He is my last one and yes I know he won't be this small forever.

I would just like to have an idea, for moms who keep on breastfeeding on demand, how long does it usually take before they can actually sleep tru the night? I never had this issue w/my other kids, not for this long.

thanks

I have a two year also but I believe he nurses more than your little one at night, I sleep through most if it though. From what I've read, Kathryn Dettwyler states:

Quote:
Normal, healthy, breastfed and co-sleeping children do not sleep "through the night" (say 7-9 hours at a stretch) until they are 3-4 years old, and no longer need night nursing.

Thanks for the article.

I actually do not know anyone who nursed that long at night and I know a lot of breastfeeding moms.  They all seem surprised when I tell them how much he still wakes up at night.

Good to know that it is "normal" even though I sort of feel traped!

I do not see myself nurse until he is 4, especially not at night.

After a failed attempt at night-weaning, we're back to all-night nursing. DS just turned 2. I kinda expected him to do it by himself by now since his older brother self-weaned and started sleeping ttn around this age (still cosleeping). My DS is on the same schedule as yours, so yeah, pretty normal, I would say. I'll read that article too. Thanks, and hang in there, OP!

Merci maman de deux! I need to remember that this is the last time (the only thought that helped me tru labor as well!!).

I am sure I'll end up missing it once he weans, parts of it anyway!
