The ginormous name thread - Page 5

justkate- I love Ruby, but I think Miriam goes nicely with Aubrey

cseky- how about Dantelle?  ;)

Thanks for the thoughts, ladies.

Just remembered this awesome MDC thread that seems to have gone on forever, if anyone's interested: What names are you too chicken to name your babies?

Especially for those whose partners aren't boring, like mine.  love.gif

ah yes, that is a good thread! I will have to check it out again.

justKate, my husband loves the name Scout, but I was scared it didn't sound feminine enough as well.

I like Scout too, but my Hubs nixed it.

Scout is a good name. True, it's not girly, but if you think about it like Girl Scouts being about empowering females, I think it's a good strong girl name.

The "What names are you too chicken to name your baby?" thread is fun, but I am still impressed with the great names you ladies here have come up with. I checked out the name thread on the May DDC, and they are so boring! We have the good stuff right here orngbiggrin.gif

I'm all for "boy" names for girls smile.gif My name is Dayle (pronounced Dale) and I always liked having a "boy" name (but with a girlie spelling)

CarlyVHT- we're cousins!! I am also a RWE decendent. My great-grandfather, an Emerson, changed his name to Ralph Waldo in honor of his ancestor. My sister named her daugher Emerson (Emmy).

justKate-  I forgot about Miriam! Miriam and Lydia were on our list last time. hmmm....

Aletheia- I really liked your screen name, but when I met another young girl (12ish?) with the name, I had to look it up.

DH still really likes Grace for a first name. I am not opposed, but it seems really short or something. Our other kids have longer names that we shorten. He likes Sunshine for the middle name, something I came up with during our first pregnancy. I don't know. Our son has 2 middle names. Maybe Grace would need 2 middle names, too.

Any suggestions?

A lady at church has twins named Gayle and Dale (female and male). They are probably in their fifties now. Anyway, she found out 2 weeks before the babies were born that she was expecting twins, but she didn't know the gender. She picked the names because they could both be used for either gender!

Along the lines of Scout and Archer, I'm trying to get DH to consider Allistair as a girl's name.  Ali or Allis are great nicknames, I figure, and it sounds like a girl name to me!  But he says no.  Say I said, well, how about for a boy?  And what did he say?

Are you kidding?  It's way too sissy for a boy!!

Sigh.

Mom2SammyJoe  - weird! My grandmother was an Emerson. I believe Ralph Waldo was her great-uncle. My father's middle name is Emerson.

mom2sammyjoe- would you consider Sunshine as a first name? Sunshine Grace sounds sweet to me, and she could be Sunny or Grace

alethia- LOL! Sometimes I think men just don't have much sense in the naming department

when i was a little girl a had a (female) neighbourhood friend named dayle and i thought it was soo cool!  I would definitely consider it for a girl.  Dale is also my father's middle name so it would work well in that way as well.  Love how you play on it in your screen name as well!

My aunt's neighbor had a baby over the summer and named her Gracelynn.  I didn't like the name at first, but every middle name I think about putting with Grace just doesn't work.  So something like Gracelynn might fit the bill....

i also thing grace is better suited as a middle name.  out of nowhere today i thought of the name "amelia grace" and thought it was really pretty.  both amelia and grace are popular names but i'm not 100% opposed to popular name so long as i like them a lot.  good luck!

Ok, I can't keep up well enough to actually respond but this thread has been amazingly helpful! And what beautiful names everyone already has for current kids and will have for our babes in april!  I am starting to actually want a name, I could not even really think about a boy name I might remotely like which is ok now because we are having a girl.  So, the two girl names I really like are:

Naomi

Phoebe

I hesitate to do Phoebe because of the whole Friends connection.

I also really want a more "out there" attribute middle name. My DS's middle name is Justice and I love it.  I feel strongly about the meaning of names and I want to give my DD a strong and unique name.  DH is only so willing to be creative so that is why it will probably have to be a middle name.  Any suggestions?  Right now all I can think of is Naomi Joy?

My baby sister is Phoebe, named after my great-grandma.  She was named before Friends came out, but grew up in the height of its popularity.  I don't think it's ever been a problem, and she is as unique as they come.  I also don't think that the show is popular enough to last beyond people our age, so besides an initial, "Oh, like in Friends" you might get every once in a while, I don't think the connection is actually very strong. It's a beautiful name and I was always jealous that my sisters got such great names and all I got was Jennifer...

Ooh I really like Amelia. I had a distant cousin with that name, but had kind of forgotten about it.

Also, when I mentioned "Dante" to DH, he quoted Clerks for half an hour. I think that one's out. We had a similar situation with "Corbin," where he talked like Chris Tucker in The Fifth Element for a while. Maybe the solution is to make him stop watching movies...

Anyway Flavorfull, Phoebe was not the worst character a child could be linked to ;) It's funny though, because the first link I thought of was "Charmed"...maybe that's just because it occurred to me when we picked Paige as a middle name so I have it "on the brain".

Tarabelle, Amelia is great. I agree that popular names can work at times. I typically prefer less popular names, but somehow both of the names we picked this time are far from being unusual. And really, my three youngest ended up with names that either skyrocketed in popularity after they got it, or were shortened to something popular (like my Lilith). I just look in interesting/meaningful places for the names I chose, and then go with it!
