Good home remedies for dry cough in 3-year-old

My son has this terrible dry cough, which started as congestion, productive cough, and runny nose about 1 1/2 weeks ago.  Now it seems to be just this dry cough.  The congestion went away.  (I have the very same thing he does.)  What are the most effective home remedies for this? I know about some of the remedies such as honey, etc.,  but am looking for those with experience on what worked best for them.  I hate my DS having this awful cough.  I hate having it myself!  Also, since it turned from a productive cough to dry cough does this mean this may be the tail end of his cold? I hope so!

mustard plaster perhaps?  Haven't tried it just read about it, to be used very cautiously with young children though, but supposedly works well.
