No let down?

Okay, I'm miffed! My first 2 babies I was a leaky mess, let down if the cat meowed at me, and let down so forcefully while nursing my babies could barely keep up! Expressing milk was always a breeze! New baby is 3 days old. This time..uhh.. well, I guess its nice that its a bit gentler on the baby and he's not choking on milk or gulping air and getting gassy. Its very strange though, that my milk doesn't seem to want out! I don't feel a let down sensation while nursing, can't hand express hardly anything, even with baby on the other side. I got a few ounces pumping, but it was slow and barely dented engorgement. What gives? Why is this time so different? I'm afraid if I can't soften the girls up soon I'll be looking at mastitis. My supply is GREAT! And I've been planning on donating, but I gotta be able to get the milk out to do that.

Congratulations on your new baby! The only thing I can think is that you are only 3 days out!! It's fairly normal that you would not be able to pump much at this point, and as long as baby is having the requisite # of wet diapers daily, I would encourage you not to worry too much about it right now. You have plenty of time to become a leaky mess :)

If you are really worried, I would contact an IBCLC, but what you are describing sounds pretty normal to me. Also, pumping too often can cause more milk production than you might otherwise have (as I assume the pumping was done between feeding sessions, not to replace one) which could in turn cause you to be more enogrged because baby can't remove all of the milk. Right now just focus on healing, sleeping when you can, and feeding baby on cue...I expect your supply is fine, and may even end up being copious again!!

my experience has been different for each baby concerning supply. you're only three days out, you're supply isn't really established yet. as far as let down goes, the more I worry about it, the longer it takes to let down. Try not to think about it. Pump while watching tv or something, idk?
