Name this rash (with pictures)

DD2 has a rash on her face. I think its eczema. DD1 had something similar when she was older (about 5 months). This started early w/ DD2, at about 3 weeks. I took out dairy and cleared up almost completely (80-90% better) within 4 or 5 days.

well, 9 days ago we went to a wedding and I ate the food there (including the most incredible cake I ever had!). Her face was still ok so I thought dairy would be ok. I had some the next couple days and then it started appearing again and yesterday it looked like it totally erupted again and I've been dairy free for about 6 days.  I'm not sure if its itchy. she rubs her face against my shoulders when i hold her sometimes, but not always.

here are my theories:

1) went to a party yesterday and ate the food. tho i was very careful not to have dairy (mostly ate chips n salsa, fruit, crackers w/ deli meat, dessert w/no dairy... at least i think. i asked for all the ingredients that went in it)

2) other people have been holding her so maybe their clothes? (although if that was the case i think it would've gone away by now. that was last night)

3) i'm not getting enough water, so the dairy isnt flushing outta my system as quickly as it did the last time and my milk is more "concentrated" with it? maybe i'm really reaching for this one??

any ideas?

awwww! she is adorable!!

It does look like eczema to me as well. Are you sure it is dairy? It might, unfortunately, be that she is allergic to something more.....I know a child who looked something like this and it ended up that he was allergic to all kinds of things.

hug.gif I hope you figure it out or someone else has some better advice. I have never had to deal with allergies myself.

possible that it could be other things :(. i'm just wondering, though, because when i took dairy out the first time it seemed to work like a charm and pretty quickly, too. this time around, she has this flare up on day 6. headscratch.gif

You probably accidentally had some dairy.  When I had to avoid wheat for ds, I was shocked how many things it can be hiding in.  Were the crackers and meat on the same plate as cheese?  Maybe the person who prepared the tray did the cheese and then set out the crackers without washing her hands.  I mean, who would?  Anyway, there's lots of ways you could accidentally get some.

That was my initial reaction to the photos too. Heat rash or a yeasty type thing. When I was pregnant I got this on my chest and I sprayed white vinegar on it to get rid of the yeast.

This looks like my 5 week old dd2 right now!  Interestingly, at our 4 week midwife app't. I was told it's just a newborn rash and totally normal.  I hope I don't have to eliminate dairy :(   dd1 never had rashes nor did she spit up.  dd2 is a huge spitter (I suspect reflux) and has this rash - spreading down her chest and on her head too.

I was wondering if all the spit up milk combined with our dry air indoors was irritating her skin?

OP, does you baby spit up a lot?

I didn't read the other posts but that looks like an allergic reaction.

well, seems to be going away slowly. some days better than others. i'm on 2 weeks without dairy and seem to notice more of an improvement when i "powerjuice" (raw greens and OJ in the vitamix).  it is winter, of course, so the cooler air could also be helping. i'll just keep this up for another few weeks and reintroduce to see what happens.

dot1, i'm not sure if she spits up a lot. whats a lot? i think she did in the beginning and now that she's upright more much less. she sometimes pukes out a bunch, but that happens maybe once or twice a week. i *think* after a big meal, but i'm not always paying attention.

dd spits up after every feed, often an hour or more after she's nursed.  If we didn't put bibs on we'd be changing her clothes a few times/day.

hope your rash continues to clear.

I'm going to first try humidifying the air, moisturizing like crazy with olive oil.  if that doesn't help I guess I'll have to try cutting out dairy
