Has anyone taken Zantac during pregnancy?
I am currently taking it. I have horrid acid reflux, and I am missing a piece of my stomach that keeps acid from going up my throat. My doctor prescribed it to me after I ended up in the hospital more than once for not being able to keep any food or fluid down for over 24hr. So far I feel like it is helping. I am also on Zofran, and I also think it helps.
I started Pepcid last week for reflux, but it is not working great. When I get the chance I think I am switching to Zantac. I take Zofran too when the Pepcid isn't enough. Maybe with Zantac I wouldn't need it.
I think you have to decide how bad the reflux is for you. For me, I mentally can't tolerate the reflux so I take the medication.
I'm with you, rhiandmoi. I can't mentally handle the nausea/vomiting. I have been in such a bad place emotionally while dealing with this. A lot of doctors do recommend Zantac during pregnancy, so I'm just going to trust that it will be okay.
I had reflux/heart burn with 4 of my pregnancies and with my last one L it started BEFORE I even got my BFP. It was actually what prompted me to take a test, the heart burn was so bad I knew something was going on. I have a bottle of over the counter Zantac and I started with the smaller mg and moved to the higher mg at my Dr. suggestion. It really worked great for me but I absolutely HAD to take it to keep the reflux at bay. My Dr then prescribed Prilosec for me and I only had to take 1 a day of that. Also worked great!
**** I'm not saying this out loud though ... I don't have heart burn this time SO FAR ****
I took Zantac for a while, but it doesn't cut it for me in terms of heartburn/reflux relief. I have to take Omeprazole. It works longer on a smaller dose.
It's better to take it, seriously. Don't even think twice about it. There's no evidence that it harms the baby, but even silent reflux can do serious damage to your esophagus. I realized that I've been hurting myself by not taking reflux meds for years, and now there's microscopic changes in my esophagus that I have to have monitored to make sure it doesn't turn to Barret's Esophagus or cancer.
My doctor gave me the all clear for Zantac, or Pepcid, including Pepcid Complete.
When I was pregnant with my twins, I took TUMS like it was water. This past summer, I had a ginormous kidney stone. I don't want to repeat that again, so I'm going with the Pepcid Complete.
Just FYI, omeprazole is not for immediate heartburn relief, so if you wait to take it till you have heartburn, it's too late.
It's to stop heartburn from happening tomorrow. What you want to do is take zantac for heartburn relief now, AND omeprazole for preventing heartburn tomorrow. Then you don't even get the beginnings of heartburn tomorrow. Then you just take the omeprazole every day, and don't get heartburn at all.
