How often does your baby nurse?

Finn is 3.5 months old (wow) and I'm just wondering how often all the other babies his age are nursing?  I'm in complete denial that he's growing up,  and I'm still feeding him like every 2-3 hours.  Do you only feed them when they show signs of hunger or do you watch the clock too?  Finn is not one to turn down a boob, and he's always willing to eat, but lately I'm noticing he goes longer stretches (like 5-6 hours) during the day.  I start to get antsy if he wakes up, plays for a bit, and then falls back asleep w/o eating first -- like I missed a feeding.  But I guess he doesn't really need it if he isn't fussing or acting hungry, right?

5-6 hours??? Can I trade you babies, please! 4 months old and we rarely go longer then 1 hour and I don't mean like an 1.5 hours, but rather RARELY more then 60 minutes between nursings.

No, if he is happy then you are fine. I've noticed that those larger babies have more reserves and just don't eat as much as you think they would. DS1 would go 2-3 often between eating which I thought as amazing because I've never had a kid do that before. All the others like to eat very often.

He is definitely a larger kid.  eyesroll.gif  But thanks for this!  It helps me feel better!  We do every hour sometimes at night which is no fun, so I really feel for you. greensad.gif

I don't think Charlie even goes two hours these days. He used to - he'd sleep that long - but now he nurses in his sleep instead. He really feels newbornish again these days with the eating and the sleeping. Lots of little naps, lots of eating.

If it's been long enough that I start leaking, I make an offer that he doesn't tend to refuse ;)

Lol, Becky, i was waiting to see what you were going to say and wow, that's not what i expected!!!

Im thinking most of the time, its 3-4 hours. That 5 hour stretch was just once. Today i nursed him at like 230, he napped, woke, played, i made dinner, he fell asleep again and it was around 6. When he woke up at 645 he was obviously hungry.

I think im going to start watching for hunger signs rather than just nursing him every 2-3 hours.

Like I just posted in the sleep thread, Millie is up 4-5 times per night to nurse, and that is when she seems to get the most nursing time in.  during the day she nurses about every 2 hours or so, but will literally nurse for less than 5 minutes at a time.  So different from Lewie, who would nurse 24/7 if I would let him.

And Carrie, I always just nurse when she shows hunger signs (she' a puker like Finn, and I find that she pukes less if she tells me when she is ready, rather than me offering.)--it may help you too if there is still a pukage factor.

Yes, I was hoping he'd go longer but eat more. I think a lot of it was that he was insisting on just nursing the one side. There's not going to be tons if you keep just doing one side. Though now it's all built up :P My left boob used to be the biggest, pre baby, but it's certainly smallest now! I'm hoping he'll do better now than I'm putting my foot down. He's having a nice long nap right now, in fact, and I had him nurse to sleep on leftie.

He doesn't like to get put down much, though. He's getting more and more floor time, but less than I expected. So I don't know. I think he's shifting. And still growing like a fiend. 19lbs at 3.5 months. FFS. :)

Still a major pukage factor here too!  Ok, thanks for that reassurance.  FXed.

FFS indeed.  What's going on with the one boob strike?  That's so strange, but the upside down nursing positon made for some funny mental pictures!  I'm glad you're putting your foot down on that.

Will nurses every 1.5-2 hours during the day.  He's not the 24/7 nurser that DS1 was, but it's still pretty often.  I think his longest day time stretches are during his naps which can be anywhere from 1.5-3 hours.

During the day DD probably spends about 30 minutes out of each hour attached to the breast.  Unless she's in the Ergo and I'm out walking, in which case she can go up to 4 hours without nursing.  Maybe she could go longer, but at the end of a 4 hour walk packing a 16 pound baby and pushing a 30 pound kid in a 20 pound stroller, I was done with the walk.  She'll nap and nurse, wake up for a bit, then back on the boob.  I've gotten her to go a couple 2 hour stretches at the house the few times I've convinced her to actually nap in the swing, but otherwise she just wants to sit and nurse a lot.  She could go a whole lot longer if she'd take a paci...

We are nursing every hour or two during the day and night, except for one big nap during the mid-day and a few hour stretch of sleep in the evenings. He pretty much quit giving me hunger signs at all, and will go from happy baby to starving-angry-crying-baby in an instant once he realizes he's hungry, so I try to just nurse him when I realize it's been over an hour since the last time. I don't always remember, but he's there to remind me!

Rafe is still every couple hours during the day.  He does take one long afternoon nap (3-4 hrs) and usually goes 3-4 hours at night.  He's starting to get teeth/grow so last couple days has been non stop nursing.  He has to go to the sitter on Wednesday because daddy is working overtime.  I feel horrible doing that too him especially when he has been comfort nursing so much.

It feels very strange to argue with a baby. He's doing okay with me being bossy. He fusses a lot, but I can't usually get him to eat if I both rock and pat his butt while he does it. I make him try it every feeding. :)

I feel like ALL we do all day is nurse.  im not great about his signals and offer a boob first to any sign of distress.  Every hour pretty much.  But he sleeps really well at night so i tell myself he's getting the calories he needs all day so he can sleep at night.  My boob ache at night lately- I know, what a problem to have....because he's going really long stretches at night- and then I worry my body will stop producing at night and he'll start waking up.

I think 3 hours is the longest Anton has gone (while awake).  Usually it's more like 2, sometimes even less.

I don't know.  I haven't kept track.  He used to go 4-5 hrs at night, but that has ended.  I would say every 1-3 hrs during the day.  He will sometimes nap a long time, but if he's awake, he doesn't usually go more than 1.5 hrs.

Alexander is a major boob-man, just like his big brother.  He will sometimes go 2-2.5 hrs during the day, but it's usually every 45min-1.5hrs.  At night, he will sometimes go for a nice 4-5 hour straight sleep stretch, but mostly he nurses every 2-3 hrs.  He also won't take a paci and loooves to comfort nurse.

It's interesting to see the differences in our kids!!  Wow.

Some thing I realized I don't have to do anymore is top him off before we leave the house.  Usually if I'm running out with both kids, I make sure Nora goes to the bathroom, and that Finn has boob.  Lately, I'll feed him, decide to go somewhere, tell Nora to go potty, pack up everything (and those of you with older DC's will know this is no 15 min task.  Sometimes takes an hour!)  and then just leave.  He's fine.  He doesn't fuss or ask to nurse.  He's good to go, lasts thru the errand.  I've never had to nurse him out and about.  Yesterday he nursed at like 1230 and then again at 4 ish.  I'd worry if he were a peanut but I'm willing to bet he's at least 18 lbs now.

Ada nurses every 2 hours for 10-15 minutes at a time. However at night, she will nurse to sleep and only wake up once during the night.

On Monday I forgot to top DS off before our trip to the grocery store and he was good throughout. Then I realized we needed something at Target too and he was super hungry by then. Thank goodness I've gotten better at nursing in the Ergo! My boobs are pretty small, so he has to be in the exact right position, but we figured it out and he nursed while I ran around Target and even at the checkout. I love the funny faces I get from people who *think* I'm doing something, but aren't quite sure.winky.gif
