Fun with hormones!

For the last week of so, I have had a really bad headache... no, I'm lying. I've had really bad migraines that have had me begging my neighbor to use her construction worker husband's drill on my temple while she held my hair back so I could barf...

After finally throwing up in front of my family doctor, he prescribed the only medication he's comfortable giving pregnant women... Tylenol 2 with codeine. I am allowed one a day, so I've been taking them before bed with some gravol so I can possibly get some sleep.

Today my doctor called me all excited sounding because he found out that some migraine sufferers react badly to pregnancy hormones and get MORE migraines than usual, and that there's really not a lot to be done.

Hurrah??

Not to be a complete debbie downer, I also wanted to share that after fighting with my endocrinologist for MONTHS, I finally have my Animas insulin pump!!!! This thing is amazing! No more will I be giving myself 8 needles a day! No more concerns about highs that I can't treat without yet another needle, and no more forgetting to check my sugar two hours after a shot because it has an alarm built in!!! This one is also waterproof, and has a really tiny adjustable doseage amount (0.025units!!) which means I can super fine tune my insulin from now on.

I am super excited with it, and love that it's waterproof, so I don't have to disconnect from my medication while I'm taking a shower or going swimming. My daughter even seems cool with it, which is great, because she used to get really upset when I had to take a needle.

Woo for hormones that only require a "shot" every 2 days instead of 8 times a day... :D

Anyone else out there having migraine/hormone issues?

I was getting bad headaches frequently, but not migraines.  They seem to have stopped though (knock on wood).  Sorry you have to deal with that.  I've only had one migraine in my life and it was hell.  :(

That's good news about the pump though!

BubbleMa, I hope that they stay gone for your sake. :)

My doctor is looking into meds we can try that are safe, but he's apparently not having luck

i was having really really bad headaches/migraines back in sept, which have subsided to just minor annoyance i can deal with at this point. i was using peppermint oil that would relax some tension and help, but wasn't getting rid of the really bad ones (i admit i was using more than just a couple of drops). it will give you a heating and cooling sensation. you might want to give it a try just to get some relief and make it semi-bearable; plus it's safer than tylenol. oh, and if you just want to try it out and see if it works for you, you can go to wholefoods and try their samples in the store, i had a bad one while shopping there one day.

Usually between 14 and 16 weeks I have a consistent headache the entire 2 weeks. It's happened with every one of my pregnancies and it sucks. For the most part though after that I don't have migraines after that for the rest of my pregnancy. Mama2Rio do you massage the peppermint oil on your temples or neck or what? I haven't tried it before, but it sounds like it's worth a shot...

your suppose to massage into your temples, but i got a little crazy and rubbed it all over my temples and forehead when i needed it really bad :P i kind of laugh at myself about it because i never went so crazy with oils. btw, make sure you can tolerate the smell of peppermint if you've been smell sensitive. it's actually one of the few things that hasn't made me sick.

I thought my headaches were hormones, and maybe there is a link somehow, but the chiropractor has worked absolute wonders for me.  I will be fine for two days, and then the headache will start to build and build and build until I can go back.  If I go every 4 days or so, I'm just fine.  After my muscles loosen up and start holding the new adjustment, my visits will need to be much less frequent.  Anyway, just thought I'd mention it.  My husband jokes that it's the "4 day tylenol". :)
