More questions about bone broths

I have been wondering about broths.  I am on GAPS and it strongly relies on broths for healing.  It is our family's main source of calcium right now.  I need it as I have osteopenia/porosis.  But I wonder how I really know how much calcium is in my broth.  How do I know how much I should be drinking?  And it is quite expensive to get high-quality grassfed beef bones.  Is it ok to buy conventional or will I loose any nourishing benefit from them?

My bones are a mixture of conventional and gently raised. I can't afford to feed my family an all organic diet.


I started using bone broth years ago when my JRA kid had some bone loss in her wrists. The bone broth seemed to help. Her x-rays actually showed some improvement after a year of the bone broth. I was convinced.... the doc was skeptical. Oh well. I make a batch whenever my bone bag in the freezer fills up. I use a kitchen hammer to break the bones some before the long simmering.

Mine are mostly from animals we raise, or from wild animals, like wild pigs.  So not organic, but healthy.  I don't know what the "dosage" is, but we use it alot, esp. this time of the year.  I'd say each day we all have at least 2-3 cups in soups.  I make at least 2 kinds of soups a week and we eat that for breakfasts and lunches and suppers (often our appetizer for supper).

I have no idea how much you should be drinking for GAPS, but I'd say that bones from conventionally raised animals are better than no broth at all.
