Lingering chest cold in toddler- wwyd

hi

My 20 month old has a lingering cold in his chest.  It has been about 3- 4 weeks now. It is not very strong, he doesnt cough all day long- but he generally has  a mucousy- sounding chest area and coughs a little every day.

After the first week I have him some herbal kids cough medicine- by Gaia herbs, they have a Gaia kids section and have a medicine for wet coughs. It is basically the herb elacampagne which is an expectorant, plus some other supportive herbs.  It didnt work so much as far as I can tell to ge tthe cold out of his chest.  He was really stuffy and runny nosed in the beginning, now it is more minor but I woud like to move out  the wet cold lingering in his chest.

I just got some echinaccea and elderberry- both of which support the immune system, and I gave him a small dose of it this morning.

doe anyone know any good remedies or methods to move a chest cold out of a toddler?

thanks

I would see a doctor if that's your normal course.  We  had a similiar situation in our 4-year old and it turned out to be "viral induced asthma." She's never had asthma before or since. It was a 1-time thing. But the symptom was a lingering cough - not very pravalent, didn't stop her from doing anything but just wouldn't go away.

Do you eat dairy (even hidden)? If so I would cut that out of his diet. Dairy can cause people to be very mucousy. Actually if it did happent o be asthma cutting out dairy helps that too.

Thanks for the responses. IT is a weird thing- he still has it but it is subtle.  He coughs every day but only about twice or three times in a whole 24 hr period. His chest sounds clear sometimes then other times I hear the mucous. I think I will call the dr tomorrow and get their opinion. I don't think it is really a dairy related thing- I know about how dairy causes mucous- he doesn't have a stuffy or runny nose, Just a wet cough and some wet noise in his chest. But right now for example, he is sleeping and he isn;t making any loud or wet be=reathing noises- but a couple of times a day he gets these wet coughs. poor little guy!

i'd have a physician give it a listen.  it could possibly be what they refer to as "walking pneumonia," too.
