MDC Running Club April 12

:LOL I did it! The other day I went for an hour long walk and mixed in a little running. It felt great! My knee was a little sore the next day so I will work back into it slowly. I can't believe that I thought I would be running again a few days after the wisdom teeth surgery - it took five weeks.: It is a gorgeous day out there today, so I am going to go for it!

YAY!!! Good for you Shanti!!!!
It is beautiful here too...though I told myself no running today, I may go for a short one!!! I am so hooked!!!!

A little offtopic...but....8 mts ago, ds was just a couple hrs old!!! I don't remember life without the little guy...he's such a little sunshine!!! ....

OKAY...back to running!!!

My plan this week to work, I've got three shifts, so that'll be 48ks...and I will also go for a bike ride with DD...
Biking:60 kms
Running:28kms
Walking:15kms
Situps:625
Pushups:200

Hope I live up to this goal...it's pretty ambitious!!!!!

Good morning folks! It's a bright and cold morning here.

Yeah Shantimama! I'm so happy to hear you're finally feeling better.

I'm going to try and keep up my situps and pushups this week, but I likely won't make it running more than today and maybe tomorrow. I'm headed down to Ohio Wednesday afternoon, and I'll return Saturday. I doubt I'll be able to go running, though I'm going to take my shoes and see if I can fit it in.

I did it! I exercised 5times last week! Hurray for me! I worked out at the gym 3x and walked 2x. Also, I've been doing a little weight training. It feels good. I'm so glad I found you all!

For this week:
Exercise 5x
Weight lifting: up to 300 reps by the end of the week

I'm headed to the gym at 4pm today!

Shanti!-You go girl!! That's great!!

Geofizz-What's in OHio? I live in Ohio! Enjoy your trip.

Mama-I envy your ambition!! 200 situps is amazing!
I'm impressed!
Stay strong out there and enjoy Spring!!

I'm going down for a job interview. I need to be there by 8 am on Thursday morning, and I'll be done after dinner on Friday. I give one talk on Thursday at 4 pm, and a second on Friday at 2:30. I get exhausted just thinking about the schedule.

Back to finishing my preps for the trip.

It is such beautiful weather here today. My run/walk this morning was great!

I read the San Bernardino running program link, and I think I might change over to that program. I like how it works into longer distances more quickly.

My plan for this week (weather agreeing)

Run at least 5 times this week
350 situps
70 pushups
lots of stretching

I wish I had a bad weather back up plan. I feel so sluggish and tired when I don't get out.

mamasoleil, I know what you mean, I was having the same thoughts yesterday about Zoe, I can't believe how quickly these last 8 months have gone.

YEah

Yeah Shantimama! Yeah SpiralChrissy! Good luck on your interview geofizz!!

Well, so far so good for me!

I am starting week 2 of my walking to running program. Over the weekend I made some mix tapes to time myself to. Today I walked about 2.2 miles in 30 minutes. Not too shabby. I certainly felt like I was working.

Wednesday I will walk at the lake and push the stroller, so I won't be able to go as far or fast, but I will just do my best.

I am so happy that DH is being supportive of me. Tonighthe knew that I had had a rough day (dd is being a Klingon), so he took her to the grocery store so I could walk and get some peace.
What a great guy!

My goals for the week are:

Walking- 105 mins
Sit ups 35 per day

well, it's supposed to be in the 50's here today and I've really been wanting to wear sandals. I had an outfit planned in my head to wear with sandals but the blouse needs to be ironed. I chose to wear something else because I just didn't have time to squeeze in the ironing after ....

I went running!!!!! whoopee for me!

I ran on Sunday morning too but didn't feel like I was really back on track until I went this morning before work. Whew! Last week was tough - I wanted to run so badly but my cold just took everything out of me. I felt like I was slipping down a slope into a non-running abyss but now I'm back. I guess I'm really into this if one week off can have that effect on me. And my 8k race is in two weeks so I had that hanging over my head too (Apr 24).

Ok, so my goal for this week is:

~20 miles total -- running on Sunday, Tuesday, Wed, Thursday and Saturday

The Saturday run should be tough because I plan to run 5 miles with my SIL who is an avid runner (and tall) but I think I can do it. I've already run 6.8 mi this week so I'm on track.

Sounds like we're all having a good week. Welcome back Shantimama! Good job, Chrissy in getting to the gym several times! Good luck with your interview, Geo (I was just thinking this morning that it should be coming up soon). Thistle, missbliss, mamasoleil - keep up the good work. (I hope I got everyone in there - my apologies if I missed someone).

So I was thinking as I was walking to my office this morning..... I've got to print out that training plan the MDC ladies are using and give it to dh. He doesn't like running but it's either that or he needs to get a bike -- he's seriously got to drop 10 pounds or he'll be 20 lb overweight by 40. Yikes!

Have a great day all!

Missbliss~they are precious

Happy Trails,

Nat

Yeah Schatz! Welcome back to running. Great progress everyone. If I can get the rest of my talks done early, go buy myself a blouse that fits, and do a half dozen other errands today, I may squeeze in a run before tonight's LLL meeting.

Ug. Don't get me started. My husband would still be overweight if he lost 30 pounds. He refuses to watch what he eats, and he only wants to lose weight by playing soccer and going roller blading. Neither of those activities are appropriate to our weather 5 months of the year, so he goes up and down each year. However, we make lousy exercise partners, and I realized a few years ago that we're both happier if we don't try to exercise together. Besides, his running to so increadibly awkward it makes me cringe: it can't be good for his knees.

Somedays I wish I could give him some of my motivation, but I guess the best I can do is lead by example.

Why is it that women (well, me anyway) feel compelled to exercise, eat right, maintain a healthy weight, while the men in our lives can just pile on pounds, get big beer bellies, and be completely out of shape? I can still wear pants I wore in college more than 10 years ago and I've had a baby. My dh's waist size has gone from a 30 when I met him to 36 and he's just not that attractive any more. But he likes me to wear short skirts, etc. Yeesh. My dh kids himself when he thinks that racing iceboats in winter is exercise (cold yes, aerobic no). We used to race sailboats in the summer together and that kept him in pretty good shape but we sold the boat when we bought our house and had dd. Dh's problem is that he needs competition to exercise (at least that's his excuse).

Ok, enough ranting for today. Back to our regularly scheduled program. :LOL

Teehee. Phil says he needs to be chasing a ball.

In his defense, he is quite healthy, he just has a Booger King habit. He somehow is able to get back into exercise in the spring without hurting himself. It's weird, but he doesn't move like an overweight person. I understand it's tough on him -- even when he was playing racketball three times a week and soccer twice a week for months on end, he didn't lose much. He has genetics and 20 years of his mom's cooking holding him back as well. I just wish he'd kick the french fry and M&M's habit and go out for a walk every now and then. He tries occasionally, but he never keeps it up for very long.

...and he snears at my running "support group". (I think it's time to learn some smilies: insert the rolling eyes smilie here.)
my dh is actually pretty healthy too (and quite good looking IMO) - I think I made him sound like a fat slob. : It's just that he takes after his grandfather who pretty much looked 12 months pregnant for the last 30 years of his life (maybe more than that - not sure when the belly first appeared). And dh carries fat in his face. Aside from the way he looks now, I also fear that if the weight keeps creeping on, there will be negative health consequences down the road and I really want to grow old and grey with him.

edited for smilies and typos

I did it!

I have to tell y'all. I really didn't want to exercise today. It's been raining for 2 days straight and I couldn't drag myself out at all to the gym. BUT, I thought of you and I worked out!
Even though my 8month old was chewing on my mat, pulling my hair and spitting on me, I still did an hour of YOGA!!!!ag
Hurray!

Chrissy~So happy for you!!!! You must feel awesome!!!

Geo and Schatz, I'm lmao at your posts!!! Dh was getting quite the belly himself...this is his second week back to work, and he's lost his belly already!!!:
So irritating that he can be so couch potatoish then lose it in a matter of wks!!! But, he burns like 5500 calories/day (he's a framer/carpenter)....and is super sexy!!!

And though I REALLY didn't think I wanted to bike to work today, I did, and it was GREAT. I beat my best time so far!!! My lungs are amazing me, the stamina just keeps building!!! Tomorrow, I'm running and hiking!!!! Off to do those darn s/ups!!! Maybe p/ups too....

mmm....yes, men who work with their hands are often very hot!

Way to go Chrissy that's what it takes to make exercise a habit - you need to just do it even when you really don't want to.

I did not run before work today -- dd's head felt hot when I nursed her at 4 and then all of a sudden she sat up and vomited the milk. She must have some bug (she had a more mild version of the cold dh and I have had but I think this is something else). I checked her temp and it was 101.3. Not too high but elevated slightly. She's never been a spitty child (I can count on one hand the number of times she's spit up in 15 months). I told dh to call me if she acts lethargic. I plan to run tomorrow (it should be warmer in the morning tomorrow anyway).

Happy spring to all

Last night I asked the babysitter to come an hour early (it was my monthly book group night) and I went for a long walk. This morning I woke up early and waled/ran for another hour. It felt so good!

I don't wear a watch and wouldn't stick to any kind of a program (I know myself too well) but I start out walking and alternate with running depending on how I feel. I usually start out with a block of each but by the end of the time I am mostly running, with a nice cool down walk at the end.

Does anyone know any knee strengthening exercises? I used to stop in at the 'Y' at the end of my runs and use the weights to keep my knees strong but I cancelled my membership.

I also wonder about proper technique for sit-ups and push-ups. It has been so many years since I have done these:

The good news is a put on a pair of jeans this morning that I wasn't even to get on a couple of months ago. They are snug but not uncomfortable. Dare I hope to wear some pre-kid clothes by summertime????

That's so exciting. That's how it started for me. Yesterday at work, my co-workers said it was time for me to get new pants...my other ones are two sizes too big for me now!!!

For situps, I do crunches, which I've heard is better for the back, and abs. Knees up, bring yourself up toward, with your hands stretched out beside you, reach past your knees....not sure if I'm explaining properly, but your arms should be alongside you, and you are reaching past your legs, not in an upward motion, hold for 10 seconds, and down again....
Does that make sense? That's how we do them at work, and to get our fitness pin!!! Which I'm trying for mine in May sometime!!!

If your knees are getting sore, something to do is try to strengthen your hamstrings. This is particularly important for women as we tend to have wider hips, so that our thighs hit our knees at an angle. One way to keep things balanced is to strengthen the hamstrings. If you can get some ankle weights, strap them on and lie on your tummy and lift your feet off the floor from the knee. It should be a pretty easy exercise, not something with a lot of exertion. Alternately, you can try to work in some bike riding. Try to find a place you can ride you bike on flat ground in a slightly lower gear than you would otherwise use. This should work your hamstrings more than your quads.

Make sense?

Hmmm. I think that seeing is the best way to do it. Can you find a video at the library? The things to keep in mind are that you should be lifting with your tummy, not your neck in sit-ups. Pushups ~ it's important to keep a straight line from your shoulders to your knees (or feet -- whatever's on the ground). No butt in the air.

Yeah! Sounds like great progress!

I've been really, really busy and frantic and stressed. I may try to get out an run today, but I also have to pack.
