Metformin during pregnancy

Thread Starter

I have PCOS and have been trying to get pregnant for 13 years. My doctor recently put me on Metformin which regulated my cycles and I got my two lines within five months. I have read a lot about whether you should or shouldn't stay on it through your pregnancy...mostly not. My doctor has opted to have me stay on it. (I am 14 weeks now) I am looking for other women who have stayed on it through their pregnancys and if their babies are healthy. Did they have to constantly poke your babies after birth to check their blood sugar? How does this effect them after birth when they are no longer getting it? Any first hand advice would be so appreciated! Thank you.

Congrats on your BFP!! Sorry you haven't gotten any responses! I know there are several ladies around here that have taken/are taking metformin, but I don't know of any off the top of my head that have taken it through pregnancy.

One place you might try (not on this site) where you can probably find some more answers is www.soulcysters.net - it's a forum especially for women with PCOS, and I'm pretty sure they have a whole subforum dedicated to metformin. You might need a certain number of posts to start a new thread asking about it, but I'm betting you can find already-created threads discussing it.

Hey Riley's girl: My fertility doc says they want me on it until 12 weeks, we'll see what my OB says when I "graduate."

Oh yeah and :

I had the same situation. My first successful pregnancy I was on Metformin until I went to my OB and she said there was not enough information to substatiate safely keeping me on it. This pregnancy (different OB) told me I could stay on it, though I'm taking Glumetza, not Metformin. I have less nausea with the Glumetza, but they're still horsepills! I did a lot of research and in the 4 years since I was taking Metformin there has been more research done to help Drs decide Yeah or Nay to your particular situation. My 3.5yo daughter is perfectly healthy and has never had her blood tested. My twins, due in a week or so, will probably not be tested either, but I'll post again if that changes.

Hi ladies...I've been asking myself this question as I'm finally pregnant.

I found this article and it looks like saying on the metformin reduces the miscarriage rates and gestational diabietes in women with PCOS.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21530058

There's also this quote from - http://care.diabetesjournals.org/content/34/10/2329.short

"Confidence regarding the use of metformin in pregnancy has been reinforced by the results of several observational studies and randomized trials over the past decade. Two meta-analyses of observational studies—one of women using metformin and/or sulphonylureas and one of women using metformin alone during the first trimester—did not show an increase in congenital malformations or neonatal deaths (7,8). While increased perinatal mortality and pre-eclampsia was noted in …"

For now my RE wants me to stay on it...but I plan on lowering the dose and geting off of it ASAP.  I was just about to stop taking when I got my BFP.

My midwives had me stay on my Metformin during the whole pregnancy. My daughter was/is very healthy. The only reason she had blood sugar checks was because she was Large for Gestational Age, not because I was taking Metformin.
