Need some help with info about Rota virus vax shedding ASAP....

Thread Starter

My parents are out in Colorado visiting my bro and SIL and their son who will be 6 mos. old tomorrow....They are taking him for his 6 mos. vaccines on Friday, which will include the Rotavirus vax. My brother told her that he already had one dose and that the dr. told him that this 2nd dose won't shed. I am FREAKED out to say the least. That being said I am a worry wort but I am so worried about my parents (whom we practically live with) bringing home the Rota virus.

My mom said she would talk to him about maybe moving his dr's appt. to next Wednesday which is the day after they leave but I know what my brother (who has a Phd and thinks I am a freak and a crazy person for not vaxing my kids) will tell her.....eyesroll.gif

Am I being crazy? Please help point me to some link that gives info about it or at least calm my fears! Thanks! smile.gif

Rotavirus vaccine package inserts

http://www.fda.gov/downloads/BiologicsBloodVaccines/Vaccines/ApprovedProducts/UCM133539.pdf

From the RotaTeq package insert:

"Shedding of vaccine virus was evaluated among a subset of subjects in REST 4 to 6 days after each dose and among all subjects who submitted a stool antigen rotavirus positive sample at any time. RotaTeq was shed in the stools of 32 of 360 [8.9%, 95% CI (6.2%, 12.3%)] vaccine recipients tested after dose 1; 0 of 249 [0.0%, 95% CI (0.0%, 1.5%)] vaccine recipients tested after dose 2; and in 1 of 385 [0.3%, 95% CI (<0.1%, 1.4%)] vaccine recipients after dose 3. In phase 3 studies, shedding was observed as early as 1 day and as late as 15 days after a dose."

So it looks like the possibility of shedding after dose 3 is extremely low. And the possibility of it shedding after dose 3, and your parents catching it, and then giving it to your family is pretty much zero.

And unless you have a particular reason to worry about rotavirus (immunodeficiency, holidays), I wouldn't worry about it anyway. If your kids don't get it now, they'll probably get it later (if they haven't already).

I found a RotaTeq insert, go to section number 5.4 Shedding and Transmission:

The first dose seems the most likely, then the second dose will likely not shed, although one stool sample did in the third dose. Also it mentioned that infants with an immune deficiency showed prolonged shedding.
