Measuring small...

I'm measuring 27 cm at 33 weeks...anyone in the same boat or have experience with measuring small?

My midwife doesn't think anything is wrong at all but she's ordering an ultrasound because my mum really wanted to go to an ultrasound before we move out of state ;). We now have a reason to tell insurance.

I've gained 33 lbs, weighing in at 163 lbs, starting weight was 130 lbs. Baby has some pretty strong kicks and kicks often.

I'm not measuring small this time, but with my daughter I measured small by a few cms. I was seeing a doctor and having a hospital birth that time - and they totally freaked out. They had me on non-stress tests twice a week the whole last month or so and ended up inducing me. My daughter was a very healthy 6.8lbs at birth.

I say, if baby is active, and your midwife isn't worried, then you shouldn't be. An ultrasound to check things out can't hurt, but I wouldn't take too much stock on anyone telling you to be worried just due to your measurements. According to my midwives this time, they are not always completely accurate.

Do you know what your measurements were at your last appt? I'm guessing your midwife isn't concerned b/c she knows the measurement is off due to fetal positioning or is so far off from your last appt that it doesn't make sense. So, she's taking proper care by sending you for an ultrasound b/c you are measuring so far behind but isn't worried due to the information she knows regarding your progress thus far.

I measured small with my DS, and like mrskatiekuj I had all the NST and such. While DS was on the smaller side, he was perfectly normal and healthy and an expected size considering he has small parents. So, I wouldn't worry, especially if your midwife isn't and enjoy sharing seeing your LO with your mom. smile.gif

I've measured 27 cm at the last 3 appointments, so the appointment I had earlier this week, on 11/22, and on 11/8, so since 26 weeks I've measured 27 cm. Baby went from transverse to head down between week 26 and week 28; I'm wondering if that has something to do with it.

I wouldn't say that my DH and I are on the small side. I'm 5'5 and pre-pregnancy about 120-130 lbs, and my Dh is 5'10, broad shoulder and chested, about 190 lbs (I think). So we're average. I was 7.4 lbs at birth, DH was 2 months premature (mother smoked, it was 1970).

My ultrasound is on Monday morning. We're moving just after Christmas, we got the start date changed to Jan. 3rd.

Oh yeah! If baby was transverse and flipped to head down that can definitely make a significant impact on measurements. I know my midwife won't do a measurement if baby is transverse b/c it throws off measurements, and she measures cautiously (i.e. doesn't worry about the measurements being off) if baby is breech. Of course, it seems a bit surprising that your measurement are still at the same point with the fetal position change. Sounds like an ultrasound is a good course of action.

I wouldn't worry. I was measuring small (with below average weight gain). I think I was measuring like  23 or 24cm at 28 weeks. Last appt at 30 weeks I was measuring 34cm. redface.gif and I only gained a lb. It was just his position.

Ultrasound went great! Baby is estimated at 4 lbs 6 oz, so the 80 th percentile! Amonitic fluid look great and so did the placenta! Baby didn't want her face to be photograph, as usual, so we'll have to wait until she's born to get a good look. :) She was snuggled with the cord and used the placenta as a pillow.
My mum was able to come so that was cool for her. Thanks for all the reassuring! Such a relief to hear that she's healthy.

Kaydove, that is great news.

And on the other spectrum of measuring small, at my 28 weeks appt. I measured 29 weeks, and at my last appt. (31 weeks) I measured 33 weeks. I said to midwife, "so, I am measuring two weeks ahead?" and she said with a smile on her face, "or you are measuring bigger" :) As in, no biggie.

RE: Measuring small...

Happy to report that I'm now measuring 34 week at 33 weeks! We had my first prenatal appt down here in San Diego yesterday and everything went great! DH is now super interested in a home birth!!! The birth center was the comprise between a hospital and home birth but since we now have a fenced yard and no one to watch the dogs here, a homebirth is making more sense. We just need to check in on insurance when my DH starts his new job on the 3rd. His work is 10 min from house and we're 30 mins from the birth center so that's a huge draw towards a home birth for him.
