Help With Tension on Brother LS590 Sewing Machine

Hey mamas - anyone else out there sewing on a Brother LS590 machine? It stitches just fine for me until I go to switch the stitch style, then the tension just goes to hell. I'm trying to use a small zig zag stitch, and the top looks okay (though not as tight as it could be) but the bottom is just a mess - the stitches are very loose. I've been looking at all the different dials on my machine for so long this morning I don't even know which setting to try to get the stitch to tighten up. And my needle keeps coming unthreaded too. 

If anyone can help me troubleshoot, I'd appreciate it! Trying to sew up some more Christmas presents today and I'd love to get them done.

I have a Brother, but not the same model...so not sure if this will be any help at all, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway.  Mine would do straight stitches just fine, but went all crazy when I tried to do any decorative stitches and it was because the bobbin had no tension at all.  I had to tighten the little screw on the side of the bobbin case a little bit and it fixed it.

That's actually something I haven't tried adjusting yet - I'm going to give it a shot and see if it helps tonight. Thanks for the tip!
