DD2 (5yo) just rediscovered an anthology of (deceptively long) animal stories and wanted me to read them to her, right as the noontime sunshine was beckoning me outside and lunch was finished:

 

DD2: I want to read 8!  8 stories!

Mama:  Those are really long, I can read you 2.

DD2:  4 now, 4 later!  I want 8!

Mama:  I already promised dd1 to read ____.  I can read you 2, then I want to go outside.

DD2:  OK, 2 now, 2 later, then 2 later, then 2 later'n that.  I want 8 today.

Mama:  OK, 2 now after dd1's story.

(DD2 finds another book she loves in addition)

DD2: I changed my mind.  I want 1 now, then 7 later.  I want to read this one instead.

DD1 (6.75yo) helped make Christmas tags with paper and glue and glitter.  The reluctant writer made tags with her daddy's name on them, plus one with her name.  DD2 joined in.  Not quite as spontaneous, but fun nonetheless.

Of course, I could include learning body control leaping from one couch to another, the horse gaits they are imitating right now, the conversation, the fighting, all as learning experiences, but it is moments like the ones above that soothe any simmering doubts of this unschooling mama.

As for me, I am learning about cost/ benefit analysis for owning and operating a printer (high/ low), adding an additional door into a permanent chicken coop (low/ high) and a crash course in personal finance (ugh!).

 

I've also learned that 2 hours of joyful work out in the late fall sunshine won't necessarily entice 2 little girls away from their game indoors-- not even when I've got 3 rambunctious kittens chasing baling twine pell mell around the yard.  Oh, well, at least we're all having fun.
