Sebastian is such a great name! It's ds's middle name (he's Xan Sebastian) and I almost wish we hadn't used it so that I could use it this time, if it's a boy smile.gif I feel like I used up the only good boys' names on ds and am really struggling to find any others.

So I said I wasn't telling my names, but what the heck. I'm still waiting for dh to "think about it" after his initial unreasonableness in response to my suggestions. But I'm hoping he'll come around.

My top choices, both unisex, are Rowan (though I like it better for a girl, actually) and Rory (probably mostly for a boy). I really love both of these and am desperate for dh to agree! Other names I like, but probably can't use for one reason or another, are:

Girls

Lark
Wren
Juniper (not sure what's up with all these nature names--not my usual style at all!)
Sadie

Boys

Milo
Arlo
Ian

So yeah...stumped for boy names, and really for girl names too, other than Rowan or Rory. I've been stalking name threads all over MDC and trying nymbler suggestions, but nothing "speaks" to me, yk?

I've been thinking of this little one as a boy (though I could be wrong), but dp and I have had a much harder time coming up with a boy name.  We came up with a few that we like, but they all end with an -on sound, so we can't pair two of them together or it would sound too rhymey.  We had to rule out any name that ends with a "s" sound or a "er" sound because last name starts with a "S" and ends with an "er" and that ruled out a lot of good names.

The ones we are left with are:

Declan

Tennyson

Caedmon

Auden

And I think we're leaning towards Tennyson as the first name.  But we're having trouble with the middle name.  The best candidate so far is Malbec (a type of wine) because dp works in a wine shop and is a bit of a wine enthusiast. winky.gif  I'm not 100% sold on it, but I can't think of anything better.

If it's a girl, we currently like Edith Francesca. (Pronounced the Italian way with a "ch")

We are sucking at boys' names too, but I've been feeling boy most of this pregnancy and we have the naming two problem too.

I have distant cousins (brothers) named Leo Perry and Perry Leo. I've only met them once or twice in my life, so sometimes I doubt this memory, but I swear it's true. So maybe Sebastian Xan is not entirely out, LOL! smile.gif

I think Wren is beautiful. I realize it's too matchy matchy and kind of a tongue twister, but I would even throw out there that if I met a child named Rowan Wren, I would think it sounded really cool.

My daughters both have the same middle name (though one is after me/my side of the family and the other is after hubbys mom)

I did consider, for a bit, making my first Jean M**** instead of M**** Jean... and then Mae was Maeryn Jean as well... and still would have been if her older sister were Jean M*****

I know, right?! I don't know if I could actually do that (too alliterative/tongue-twistery, like you say), but how adorable would that be?! Rowan Lark--same thing smile.gif

As for poor Leo and Perry...that's just crazy! I'm convinced that I must be able to come up with two other boys' names. Surely there must be some? (Assuming dh nixes the two brilliant ones I already suggested!)

How out there is Sirius? We keep coming back to it. I like it, I just don't know how others perceive it.

I love it and wish I was brave enough to use it. My hesitation is from sirius radio, not Harry Potter. I would be jealous-ish if I met a real-life little Sirius!

Sirius is such a cool name--I love it myself. BUT: I think using it will mark you as a HP fan forever, just like all those kids born in the 70s/80s and named for LOTR characters... I'm a huge HP nerd and everyone knows it, so I just couldn't do it. It's possible that in a decade or so the HP mania will have died down and the association will be lost (this is what I'm hoping has already happened with Rory and Gilmore Girls!), but honestly--I don't think so.

However, it is a cool name, and I doubt it'll ever be super popular even with fans, so if you don't care about the HP associations, you should go for it!

I do worry about the HP association, but I wonder if it will go unnoticed by many. As he's not a main character or even in all of the books, I kind of hope it might not scream Harry Potter at most people. Maybe I am being too hopeful though. It is such a cool name- the brightest star in the night sky... I mean how great is that? But more than worrying about what people think of me, I don't want him to be teased for it.

I wanted to use Remus but my hubby vetoed that on the basis of Harry Potter :(

Regulus as well and he's only mentioned in the last book at any length.

But I think even if people make the harry potter connection... Sirius isn't a bad guy, he's actually pretty awesome and turns into a cuddly black dog (as opposed to a werewolf which is why I couldn't use Remus *pout*). It's way better than naming your son Tom Marvolo, Fenrir or something like that, which would elicit the not so warm and fuzzy feelings from the name association.

Yes. I'm a Potter geek. Not hardcore, though.

You know, I always think that if you like the name that much, then use it. Who cares where it came from. Some names used in literature and film are really cool and interesting names. And really, if anyone gets a Harry Potter association from Sirius, they'll notice it and then move on and probably not think about it again. I think about people I have known in my life that had some really interesting names and I never really thought twice about it being weird or anything. It was just their name. For example - I once knew a girl named Karma Cloud Smith. Seriously. But you know what? Karma is an awesome name for a girl and it fit her quite well. That's just me, though.

I think we've definitely settled on Charlton Thomas or Charlise ???. Now I need to come up with a good middle name for Charlise. I want to use the name of some kind of flower (but not Rose, I have a family member I really don't get along with that has that name). I heard someone on a tv show mention that Pivoine is the French word for Peony and I kind of like that, but I don't know if that's making the entire name too French, which we are not. It seems sort of pretentious to me to give a kid two French names when we're not even close to having that heritage.

I am about 75% sure we are going to use it. We love it, it's unique, has a good meaning etc. And you're right, it just becomes their name. My MIL HATED Keagan (my son's name) when we announced it. Even "accidentally" pronounced it as "Kegel" to make a point as to how awful she thought it was. But a few months after he was born, everyone, MIL included thought that it was a good name for him.

I love Charlise and I don't think that Pivoine is pretentious. It's pretty.

Charlise Dahlia?

So now I'm second guessing my boy name choice (which is very boring by this thread's standards). I was thinking of Seth, but I have noticed that DD lovingly calls her brother Benny (which I abhor but it's cute when she says it) and there is really nothing you can do with Seth. That takes me back to Sam. Originally, I thought it was too common, but I think it is just steady, not necessarily trendy. I don't know that I would do Samuel, though. The irony is that both Sam & Seth are names of partners where I work. Sam is the "big boss" so it would be kind of weird. Not a deterrent, but I'm sure he would have something to say. DS coincidentally shares a name with another partner, but I wasn't working there when he was born, I think all of the people I work for are brilliant but it's funny how the names have gotten close. I think if we did Sam it would be Sam Jacob. There are a few jacob's on DH's side of the family. Or maybe if I went with Samuel, Samuel Allen. Allen is a popular middle name on both of families. Initials would be SAW, then. SJW is probably safer. DH is SMW so if ever abbreviating, we would likely use all three initials.

Seth is a great name--I like it better than Sam, myself. My mother named all 4 of her kids things one couldn't shorten (as she hated going by a nickname her whole life). But of course people find ways to either shorten even unabbreviatable names (mine's Sarah, for eg) or to add syllables to short names. Funny about your bosses/partners at work! Maybe they'll take it as a huge compliment and give you a raise :)

My cousin's son is a Sam Allen! I like Seth but I really like Sam, and I agree- it's just a nice, solid name which seems to be my standard for boys. Henry is another boy's name I like that I think is similar. And Henry is actually Sam's brother! For some reason I feel like boys with that style of name seem to grow up to be easy going, nice guys.

We're stuck. DH and I just can't seem to agree on a name. Our styles are so different- he wants something epic and I tend to go with cutesy or nature themed names. I really wanted Posey (call her Poe) for a girl but he nixed it. The only names we both have kept on the list are Maya, Mia, Juniper, and Zoe and I don't feel any strong attachment to any of them. I like Mia and Maya but worry they're a little too popular, our last name starts with J so I just can't decide how I feel about using Juniper, and I like Zoe but it's also a bit popular and I would really like to use the middle name Nizhoni, pronounced Ni-jho-nee, a Navajo girl's name (DH is Navajo) and the alliteration of Zoe Nizhoni J-last name is wayyyy too off for me. I just can't seem to find something that really clicks with both of us!

Added another name to our girl list, Ivy.

How did I miss this thread until now??  We had our ultrasound yesterday, and nailed down names this weekend so we'd be ready!  I hate saying "baby" the whole time.

My boys are Franklin (after his great-grandfather), Grant (after Cary Grant, hubby's favorite actor), and Harrison.  So, we considered a few "I" names to keep with the alphabetical themes -- and then threw that idea out pretty quickly!  I didn't want to be so limited for my first girl, and we already know Ians, Isaacs and Isaiahs.

We decided on Keaton Jack for a boy, and Eliza Jane for a girl -- and we're having a girl!!   Completely thrilled to have our first girl, but I'm a little sad not to be able to use "Keaton Jack," cause I think it's totally cute. :)

Other names on our lists...

GIRLS:

Isolde

Lila

Lillian

Lucy (Grant would have been Lucy)

Louisa

Caroline

Amelia

Audrey

Ardeth

Rilla

Rillian

Macy

Meredith

Paisley (Harrison was almost Paisley)

Vivian

Victoria

BOYS:

Kelvin (hubby's a chemist)

Kingsley (yes, HP fans, too!!)

Jackson (fit the presidential theme, but hubby didn't like)

Ike (ditto)

Jude

Oliver

Benjamin

Ansel

Auden

Atticus

Oberon

Josiah

Japheth

Judah

Lachlan (top 3)

Mack

Ogden

Quentin (saving this for #5!!)

Rowan (top 5)

Simon

Tarquin

Thaddeus

Tristan

Twain (have a friend with a Twain -- so cute!)

Vaughn

I hope that adds a few new ones to the thread -- I didn't read every post.

Those are great names! You seem to have a great knack for finding names that are beautiful and classic, but also creative. I love Kelvin for a boy (similar reason--we are both engineers and DH is a chem. e.) It's funny because I was finding it so much easier to come up with girl names, that I had to put a fair amount of thought into my boy name list. Now that I know we're having a girl, I almost feel bad that we can't use some of the cool boy names we eventually came up with.

On your list, I especially like Ansel, Auden, Oberon, and Ogden, and of your girls' names Isolde and Lila. And of course Eliza Jane is great.

AFM DH is still really committed to Evelyn for a girl. I do love the name, but I just have this nagging feeling that it's getting really popular, and I can't seem to get a handle on how popular. I don't mind a reasonably common name, but I'd rather she not be one of 4 in her classes at school.
