I just went to the doctor and got a pap last week. They said I have a yeast infection and that i need to get a colposcopy for some abnormal cells they saw. Im very scared and kind of depressed. Even though I havent went and got the colpscopy yet. i have a three year old and now am prego with my second child. Am only 21, my mother is older shes in her 60s and I cant tell her cause shes an alcoholic and shell get depressed and start drinking. My father has a wife and tells her everything I dont want her to know we really just dont get along. I really dont want to tell my husband cause he'll take it the wrong way and think I cheated on him or something. But then again, I dont know if he cheated on me and it can be transmitted. But I dont know how to keep it from him either. Am very  worried and dont know who to talk to since I pretty much have noone.greensad.gif

Hey sweetie, HUGS hug2.gif

How stressful, I'm sorry you are feeling alone right now. Pregnancy can actually cause abnormal cells on the cervix. This doesn't mean that your husband may have cheated on you.

I don't know anything about your specific medical history, but if it were me I would wait until after the pregnancy to get this procedure done. Sometimes abnormal cells are detected in early pregnancy, and a repeat pap after delivery shows normal cells. Just something for you to consider.

Take care, and welcome to MDC.

I would NOT allow a colposcopy while pregnant. No matter if they tell you it is safe, I would get a second opinion before I allowed it.

I wouldn't do it, simply because if you end up needing treatment, they won't treat it until after your pregnancy anyway. So why stress about it now? I'd wait. Plus, any abnormal cells have a good chance at being shed away during birth and will come back completely normal then.

I would get a second opinion.  Abnormal cells can be very common and it's unwise to jump to any conclusions.  Take care of yourself!  Please try to get another opinion.  -thecountrymouse

I had a similar situation during my first pregnancy in 2004. I was told I had abnormal cell growth after my pap smear. My OB talked me into a colposcopy and biopsy. I transfered care shortly thereafter to a CNM at a birth center. She was appalled I had never been told of the risk of miscarriage with a biopsy of my cervix. She also told me that women often show abnormal cell growth patterns on the cervix during pregnancy and it typically resolves itself after the birth.

She was right. I've never had an abnormal pap again.

In retrospect, I would have just waited until after birth to do the exam and biopsy. That is just me though! A second opinion would really help.

My PAP at the beginning of this pregnancy came back with abnormal cells.... My midwife told me don't worry about it it's probably just because you're pregnant. So we'll do another PAP at my 6 wks checkup after the baby comes, but I'm not worried.
