EBF, then baby-lead weaning, now no bowel movements for three days.

I have been exclusively breastfeeding my LO for about 9-10 months. I recently began introducing some solid foods, mostly green vegetables. I still breastfeed often during the day and do not provide my LO with any other liquids, like water. On Tuesday evening, I fed my baby some homemade soup, which was mostly comprised of zuchinni, one onion for the entire soup, some garlic cloves, ginger (tiny amount), and chicken broth. Then, the soup called for being purred, so it was much like the consistency of traditional store-bought baby food. My LO ate maybe three table spoons of this and has not had a single bowel movement since either Monday or Tuesday before eating the soup. I've only given LO some avocado and more soup a night or two later.... still no bowel movement. My LO is teething, and still breastfeeding well. All behavior seems otherwise normal.

Is it normal for a baby eating this few amount of solids not to have a bowel movement for this period of time? Before this, my LO was having a larger bowel movement usually every other day, with only a few exceptions.

As a breastfed baby gets older they may go longer without stools. When they have stools they may be large (out the diaper large). No need to worry as long as the stools aren't dry and hard to pass.

My little guy needed water once he started solid foods (baby led weaning) or he would start to get constipated. As long as I offered him a small glass of water with his solids his poops stayed soft and he avoided discomfort.

In the first few weeks after we introduced solids through baby-led weaning, poops decreased frequency.  At one point we were up to nearly a week without one.  Then, it was huge!  But more solid.  Now we're eating solid food 3x a day and we have a poop once a day.  Bowel movements resumed with regularity around 1 month after introducing solids.

Great suggestion. I am planning to buy a glass sippy cup. I figured with all the breastmilk that maybe water wasn't really necessary just yet. I was hesitant only because I didn't want LO to be filling up on water instead of breastmilk or solids.

Yes! It was five days before LO had a bowel movement. I was getting concerned. The stool was must different in consistency, but seemed to pass without any trouble. My LO did not like the feeling of being in the mess though! Makes sense though because we practice elimination communication.

So good to know it took your little one's body about a month to adjust.

Thanks so much for the info!

I used a stainless steel shot glass hide.gif and only gave 1 oz of water a meal - that did the trick!
