We had our anatomy scan today. We decided that since we are planning a home birth, it would be best to get the scan to be prepared for any problems ahead of time. Well, baby has 3 "soft markers" for Down Syndrome including (1) spot on the heart. its a calcium deposit. they had an acronym for it but I forgot it. (2) Short femurs and (3) fluid on the kidneys. They said with 3 markers my chances of having a baby with DS increase and they need to see me back for another scan in 4 weeks. They offered amniocentesis today, but I was just so overwhelmed I said no, need to think about it before deciding what to do. Now I am just trying to take it all in. It hasn't really hit me yet. We will not terminate, so I suppose the only real benefit to amnio is the confirmation that baby has DS for sure? Anyone ever had 3 markers & ended up with a normal baby? I feel like I need to prepare myself somehow...but I am just kind of numb this evening.
I think I might post in the special needs threads just to see what those mamas suggest as well. I really want my home birth, but I have heard that DS babies are more likely to need medical assistance after the birth. I emailed my midwives to ask what they think, and am eager to hear back from them. I hope they tell me that a baby with DS can still be birthed safely at home.
