Gassy

Hello All,

Baby Sam generally passes a fair amount of gas, but in the pass few days it's been even more, which seems odd because about 4 days ago I decided to cut out dairy which is often said to be the the culprit...Today Sam's been quite fussy, which is rare for him. And last night he got up about every 2 hours (it's usually more like every 3)...

Any suggestions to help remedy the problem? The last time we saw Sam's doctor he suggested drinking fennel tea, which I've done a few times but haven't noticed any change.

I have a pretty gassy little guy as well. I massage his belly and bend his legs to help him let it all out. Letting him jump around in his exersaucer helps too. The foods that seem to make it worse for him are oatmeal and broccoli. I cut out dairy when he was a newborn and that didn't seem to be the culprit.

Charlie is crazy gassy currently, too! I can now pump his legs while mostly sleeping. I thought I knew why, but I was wrong!

Maybe it's because they're pulling off more while nursing? Or because they've "become more efficient" nurses so they gulp it down faster?

I think pulling off is making it worse lately now that you mentioned that. Augustus is cutting several teeth right now and he doesn't like the way his mouth feels while nursing, so he will pull off and complain then latch on again. Poor babies!

Thanks, Tamera and Beckily. Baby Sam has been drinking a lot quicker lately, so perhaps that's playing a part? As for dairy, I'll wait a couple more weeks, then perhaps go back if nothing changes. As you said, Tamera, that may not be the cause...

I don't eat broccoli or oatmeal. I guess it all depends. I was reading an article that listed dairy, chocolate, wheat and citrus as possible culprits...I had to laugh because that's a good chunk of what I eat...Ah well...

If it's chocolate... well, then he's going to be gassy. He's taken away my sleep, he can't take away my chocolate! :D

Ha! I get it. The "no chocolate" thing is kinda, sorta killing me too...not sure what to do. But I gave up hot fudge sundaes a while back when a Ben and Jerry's extravaganza seemed to upset Sam's tummy, and I'm already staying away from wine and coffee, so I may as well toss this into the bunch. It's going to be intensely hard. Looking forward to the day I can toxify my body with all kinds of junk...Kidding (sorta)...
