Getting through a tough potty regression?

DS1 is 28 mo and a few weeks ago he decided he would use the potty and wear underwear.  He has done fantastic with only an accident here and there.  Most days he even stays dry for naps.  He has done great out and about, having no problem with public restrooms.  I have been totally amazed and thrilled and he knows how proud we are.

Two days ago some visiting relatives left and DS came down with a bad fever that night.  He wouldn't eat for almost 20 hours.  When he got over it and was back to normal- potty training has gone out the window.  He has soaked through 5 pairs of pants this morning alone- he is going like every 20 minutes.  He has pooped in his pants every time since he was sick.

Do I put him back in diapers??  This seems counterproductive but I can only do so much laundry and can only be so attentive to getting him on the potty so frequently (we had been doing every 45 min-hour but every 20 min??).  I have a early crawling infant to deal with too among about 800 other things going on.  Please wise mamas, any words of advice or btdt?

Every 20 minutes sounds like it's related to his recent illness or to a food he is sensitive to. I'd probably do pull-ups if you really can't handle the laundry or every-20-minute potty runs.

Do you know his BM schedule well enough to catch some of those?

This is hard... were you using cloth diapers?  I think I would put him in the underwear or training pants, but put a cover over him ... I would not go back to diapers.
