3-year-old with cough (now only in morning slightly)

My son developed a cold a few weeks ago with a terribly runny nose and some congestion/cough, which sounded a bit phlegmy at the time but he never coughed anything up.  He has since gotten over that but still has had somewhat of a lingering cough since then but the cough has decreased a lot.  It is now probably about 5-6 weeks later and he still seems to cough (now a dry cough), but only in the morning for a short time, maybe the first 10-20 minutes after waking up and it's not an uncontrollable cough.  This cough has never bothered him in that it doesn't interfere with his activities, mood, sleep, etc, and like I mentioned it's only in the morning at this point for a short time.  Is this something at this point I should be concerned about? I was thinking of taking him to the doctor just to check him out.  I did call the doctor last week and they said coughs can last a while (4-6 weeks) and just need to run its course as long as there are no other symptoms/signs/distress, etc. and that the cough is getting better not worse, which it has.

I'm hesitant to take him to the doctor because he is not truly sick and I'd rather him not be around other sick kids if he really has no issue, but at the same time, I want to make sure there is no cause for concern at this point.

As long as the cough is getting better , and, there are no other symptoms, I suspect it will self-resolve.
