Would you make the move?

Dp and I have the opportunity to move. Our current living situation is the two of us, my girls and our roommate (who is also my ex and father of my two kids, weird, I know). If we moved we would be moving into a much bigger house, but with exh's g/f and their child together, whom I babysit for. The only bills that would need to be paid are water and electric and we would split them in thirds. So clearly this is appealing because it would save us a TON of money. We are barely getting by and relying on student loans to pay monthly expenses. By moving into the other house we could get caught up and pay off some of our debt. The only negitave that is hindering me is its not in a great area. It's not the ghetto, but it's not a "leave you doors unlocked at night" neighborhood either. It's the historical part of town that's mixed with really nice restored homes and not so nice ones. It would be temporary, maybe 10 months to a year.

While it is very, very appealing idk if we should do it or not. It would allow getting caught up on bills and paying down some debt, but moving into a sometimes sketchy part of town scares me. WWYD?

How old are the kids? For me, this would be the deciding factor. Little ones don't go out on their own anyway. If your kids are already in the habit of riding bikes or playing semi-unsupervised, their freedom would be greatly curtailed. Are they in school? Changing schools just for one year is probably not a great plan. If your kids are little, what impact would the "quality" of the neighborhood have on them? Maybe a great park is less convenient but I have never had a problem going out with my kids. I have always lived in "marginal" neighborhoods, and it really had little or no impact until my kids were nearly teens. Do you regularly go out after dark now? As a single mom, I have never, never had a safety issue in any neighborhood, but my life is pretty much indoors after dark.

I would move,but my concern would be the bills if any of the contributors leave.Could you handle the bils on your on if you did not have the income of the others. If yes,even temp until you found a new roomie,then I would do it.

If you recall the Petit family was rich and lived in a very nice neighborhood,and look what happened to them. The biggest concern for a ghetto area is the increase risk of stray bullets. You should never leave your home unlocked day or night,and keep kids supervised at all times.Consider a dog as a burglar deterent.

I would make the move.Change is scary.Sometimes it will work out,and if not you just make a change again. Never know till you try.
