Popping in with totals from yesterday!!

41 books donated to the library

9 items (mostly books) donated to Goodwill

Total yesterday--50 items

New Total:

275/2012

$0.00

Later today I will finally be taking that box of cd's I took out to the car the other day (already counted since they were out of the house and not allowed back in) to Half Price Books to hopefully get a few dollars for them. It kinda hurts to think of how much $$ was spent on them back in the day to only get a few cents for them now, but they did get listened to a lot over the years, so I guess we got our money's worth already!!

Off to a slow start this year, but I have big decluttering plans for this weekend (DH just doesn't know it yet, lol!)

The local music store only wanted a few, but they gave us $40 for the ones they took. DH got $100 easily posting the remainder of our old CDs on Craigslist last year. So many people were interested in buying them. We probably could have asked for more. We just sold them as a huge bundle. We were afraid that we wouldn't be able to sell them, so we were very happy to make $140 off them.

So my DH challenged me last night... if I get halfway to goal by the end of January (that's 1006 items), he'll hire a babysitter and take me out to a fancy dinner.  love.gif

The trouble I'm running into is what to do with all of this stuff.  I have 2 bins of kids stuff already, 1 clothes and 1 toys, but I can only find 1 kids consignment shop (in a Metro area!), and last time I was in there their clothes racks were so packed I didn't even want to try looking through them.  For the adult clothes, the consignment stores want the stuff pressed and on hangers and even the good causes that take donations (that help people with clothes for job interviews) wants them pressed and on hangers when donated... do people seriously have all these extra hangers lying about they can donate all their clothes on them?  It's looking like everything's just going to have to go to Goodwill or Salvation Army, which kinda sucks.  I could hang onto the kids clothes for the big consignment sale in April, but I'm due in May - and I don't want this stuff lying around for the next 4 months.

I need to look into shelters and the like for the stuffies and the toiletries, since I know no one else will take those.

So where do you ladies donate all this clutter?

Have you tried using ThredUp to swap them? No pressing required, and you can either use the credits earned to get more clothes or cash out via paypal. I use it all the time and LOVE it! You can swap everything you have listed!

ETA: Just found 12 more toys to go to consignment.  113/2012!

Everything is in the car and going to Once Upon a Child right now!

Last night I cleared out the downstairs bathroom and got rid of 57 more items.  Mostly half-used bath/beauty products, some old nail polish, 2 cat brushes, and a rubber donut from when I had DS!  And I got $42 for the toys I took to consignment.  I knew the bathrooms would get me big numbers...it'll likely get tougher from here on out.

170/2012!

$42.00

Joining again this year....only made it to 1376 last year, but we had some unexpected road bumps. I have high hopes for this year! So far I only have 1 thing-rest of a bottle of folic acid given to pregnant friend. But I have things in the car to give to a friend on Saturday, and I am working on our big twice-yearly consignment sale, plus have other things sorted out to go various places-just need to be able to do it with 3 kids 5 and under, and hauling big boxes to different places. But it WILL get done!!!!

I'd love to join. We're hoping to put our house on the market this summer, so a reduction in "crap" means 1) less stuff to hide, 2) less stuff to clean and 3) less stuff to move. ;)

However we're not really terrible packrats (and I did some major purging in the recent nesting phase, hehe!), we're just really... REALLY... badly disorganized. Especially since our basement is under construction, so things get moved/used, buried, lost... have to buy another _______ because we can't find it and we need to use it even though I KNOW we have one already, etc etc...

So for my family, we'll be counting 1) stuff that leaves the house and 2) stuff that is found/organized so we do not have to buy ANOTHER one. >.<

Subbing, and be back later when I've done some cleaning! ;)

$27.75

Yeah, didn't get a whole lot for the cd's (about 24 cents apiece), but that's really okay. I mean, yeah...it'd be cool to get more, but personally it's worth not making as much on them and going ahead and getting them out of the house. A lot of them were older cd's too, not the latest and greatest and in demand stuff since we haven't bought ANY cd's in the past four years!! Same reasoning behind donating to Goodwill vs. stashing in the garage and doing a yard sale. It's just worth it to me to get it OUT and not have to mess with listing stuff.

I do post some things on Freecycle (like some Bible study books yesterday that just wouldn't have been a good fit to donate to the library or Goodwill) and on Craigslist (like some of Bug's toys that are more expensive new and still in reasonably good shape)...but for the most part, I just like to clear things out of the house as fast as possible once it's decided upon that it isn't going to be kept.

add 12 random things to the garbage/recycling from my purse!  I couldn't find my keys and was getting really frustrated so I dumped the whole thing on the floor and cleaned it out.  Keys weren't there though - they were in my pocket....  shy.gif   ....in my sweater *underneath* my raincoat - it tricked me!  LOL  But at least my purse is (somewhat) clean  orngtongue.gif

I talked my husband into getting rid of our DVD of The Simpsons Movie. it's just about the only movie we own that is "ours" rather than "mine" or "his", and I didn't care for it. He was willing to get rid of it when he saw it was full-screen. I told him when he gets a hankering to watch it again he can rebuy it. He doesn't watch many movies--hopefully that won't be for a while. :)

I do count trash if it has stuck around way longer than it should have. So I don't count bread tabs when the bread is initially finished, but if it's been sitting around for lord knows how long and I remove it in straightening the area, it counts then. I'll continue this until I find myself hoarding trash to help my decluttering count, and I'm not seeing myself doing this.

This is the 3rd year I've participated, and this is the year I'm finally going to make the goal number!  I love the idea of attaching money made from getting rid of stuff, that's a huge incentive for me to be able to see that total at the end of the year :)

So here I go...

Cleaning out the kitchen tonight (so embarassing)

44 paper bits, recycled (reciepts, expired coupons, dozens of daycare drawings, daycare info sheets, garden starter pot plans from last year *ugh!*...)

13 trash bits (pipe cleaner antlers and google eyes from christmas candy canes, plastic bags...)

2 old medication instruction forms, shredded

59/2012

$0 made on getting rid of my old stuff!
