Joining in :) I completed the 2010 challenge (moved house so that was a great help!) then fell very behind with the 2011 one (but had a good excuse - new baby!), I'm getting back into the decluttering swing again and these threads are great for motivating me... we still have some unpacked boxes in the attic I need to tackle!

So to start 2012:

28 items clothes - charity shop/given to a friend

4 unwanted gifts - charity

3 old electrical items - electrical recycling

2 big cardboard boxes - recycled

16 expired items from pantry - compost bin/rubbish bin

2 old toys - charity shop

1 old toy - binned

1 big bag of random junk - bin

1 big bag or random papers etc - recycled

58/2012

Also, I'm going to continue to count items that I successfully remove off my huge to-do list in the house as these are such mental clutter for me (and often physical clutter too)!

- random rubber tube removed from laundry room wall & binned

- gutters thoroughly cleaned and deforested!

Total: 60/2012

I was mad at myself for falling short of my goal in 2011. Hopefully 2012 decluttering will be a success. As soon as my head calms down it will be time to start. (Happy New Year)

24 cans food

1 decorative plate

2 bags lettuce

1 box old strawberries

3 bags old veggies

total 31/2012

I think everyone does this challenge a little differently with their own rules, so do whatever you think would feel best to you :) I count things that come into the house, except consumable things like food and toilet paper- but if I was in your situation I probably wouldn't count furnishing a house with necessities.  Maybe count new things after you feel you pretty have the basics covered? Or only count new things that aren't basic necessities? I don't know! lol

I have a hard time believing I could have much less in this house than I do, but I want to still participate just so I don't get off track and bring a ton of new things into the house and make it crowded again.  We're not down to the bare minimum, but everything we have feels like it either has a good purpose or something we really enjoy having (like the few decorations we have).  Although we have a new baby on the way and I think I need to change our sleeping arrangements. I was just cosleeping with my 5 and 2 yr old and they started sleeping sideways and pretty much pushed me off the side of the queen bed. So I just got up. lol. I think I am going to try to talk to my 5 year old about maybe getting her own bed sometime this year, and we might have to declutter a bit to fit another bed in this apartment.

I really can't fathom being able to get rid of 2012 things unless I go on a shopping frenzy.  I have 3 bedroom two bath and two rooms are empty.  I have probably gotten rid of more stuff these past three years than I could have ever imagined.  I still have a few areas that could be more organized... but I may not make it to the big old number.  I'm also not counting consumable items.

So I decluttered and did a major clean in our bathroom today.

63 items either tossed or put in a box for donations.  I didn't count specifically what, but there was a lot of old, half used bath/beauty products, expired medicine and first aid stuff like polysporin, an extra shower curtain, and some unused items like candles, lotion, bubble bath etc.

16 items of DS's, mostly toys and a few outfits going to consignment.

3 magazines, recycled.

1 pair of boots in almost new condition given away to a friend.

So that is 83/2012!

This is a wonderful idea. I have some projects that create mental clutter, as well. I will count them as I complete them this year.

I'm sending the following to my sister who recently had a baby:

2 Pairs of Baby Shoes

1 Wet Bag

2 Dappi Covers

3 Hats

1 Crib Sheet

1 Baby Monitor

2 Baby Headbands

23 Articles of Baby Clothing

I also decluttered 1 stack of papers.

1 + 36 = 37/2012

I wish I had that problem of not enough stuff to get rid of!  After decluttering for over 18 months I still have so much to get rid of...no empty rooms here!

I only count consumable items that have actually been like clutter....cluttering up the pantry or the fridge shelves for months or years.

Crazy.  I think it helped I was super broke the last three years and we sold off stuff we didn't need and didn't buy much except for what we needed.  So... I infact have nothing because I had nothing.  Not bad!

I just recalled how in 2010 I aimed to double the goal and I did...I threw out 4020 things, so that means I have now got rid of over 6000 things from my home since May 2010!  yikes2.gif

I don't know if I am more shocked that I even owned that much stuff in the first place....lol.gif

WOW. It's absolutely is amazing. I hadn't thought of it in terms of THOUSANDS. But I do feel less weighted these days! I just checked and I decluttered 2043 in 2010 and another 2048 in 2011 for a total of 4091. WOW! And it seems I'm on a roll again this year!

I think I'm going to join in.  DH has commented today both about the kitchen stuff and the toys needing decluttering, and we're talking about making a LD move in the near(ish) future.  But neither of us has really thrown much away in the almost decade we've been together.  Scary.

Funny thing is, I mentioned the challenge, and he asked if we actually owned 2012 items... ROTFLMAO.gif

We're also expecting #2 (our last) this year, and I'm facing having to sort through all the stuff left from DS and decide what I need to keep and what needs to go (I've kept everything so far), so I don't think I'll have the slightest problem hitting that number.  My big problem is figuring out what to do with all the stuff, since probably half of it is not landfill worthy, but just stuff I don't want in my house any more.  What do you ladies do with that stuff?  I'm thinking I should just stick a Rubbermaid tub in my trunk and plan to take it to Goodwill/Salvation Army every week or so.

I tend to either put things in a Thredup box and list it to get rid of them, or stick them in a tote in the garage for yard sales. I know - not really getting rid of things totally, but we rely on the yard sale income to supplement my meager earnings.

Things that really really aren't moving in either thredup or yard sales get taken to the local thrift shop a bag at a time - they do a promo where you get a 30% off coupon when you bring a donation, and we buy nearly everything from there so it really helps.

I'm joining this year.  I participated in 2010, didn't make my goal, but decluttered over 1600 things.  I signed up for 2011 but didn't stick to the challenge past the first week.  I know we've accumulated more stuff since the last challenge and the clutter needs to go.

Starting again, I like to post what I get rid of and if I sell anything I keep track of the $$ 'earned' from that as well.  Last year I either didn't keep track very well or I didn't sell much (probably a combo of both)

1 burnt out candle

3 yarn papers

2 plastic bags

6 RX bottles

NEW TOTAL

12/2012

$0.00

I'm in!  I try hard to keep the clutter to a minimum but I'm amazed at how much can accumulate... and so quickly.  With a new babe coming I can only imagine how many new toys, clothes etc... are about to arrive for both baby and DD.  Yikes!  At least over the past few months I threw away lots of stuff we moved and didn't need so we're starting with a bit of a deficit :)

Starting today:

6 old toiletry items

17 trash items

6 donation items

Total:
29/2012

+3

1 huge pile of receipts DH has tucked into a desk

1 destroyed chapstick

1 bouncy ball
