Baby shopping list.. - Page 2

I'm overwhelmed with the thought of making a registry... Where to start?

amazon has a good amount of stuff-- and you can put cloth diapers and such.  if you have a local store, you might be able to do a registry there, too...

Almost anyplace but babies r us!  in my opinion...

I LOVE the idea of doing Amazon! I never thought of that. Do they have an actual registry?

Amazon baby registry :) they sure do!

I feel silly making a registry because I don't **need** anything aside from cloth diapers being that this is my 3rd boy- I have clothes, bassinet, carseat, moby wrap, stroller, ...everything that is really necessary & a bunch of unnecessary items - I've got it all packed away in my attic! I might want a new breast pump because my old one has been in the attic for 4 years & I'm not sure that's good for the thin plastic tubing. On my "Want-List" are the following items: ... Maybe I'll register for them just for fun :-)

Tummy Tub
Baby K'tan
Pottery barn stroller blankets (so soft!!)
Angel Care Baby Monitor (it beeps if baby stops breathing!)

Instead of buying items on my want list, I need to use the money to you know, pay bills and buy food lol! I'm so lucky to have everything stored away from my other babies.

I know what you mean! We have a lot leftover from DS. I have coworker who wants to throw me a big shower. She LOVES throwing parties and is VERY excited. I told her I was thrilled and honored, but let her know that showers for second babies are sometimes frowned upon. She just laughed it off, but I'm a tiny bit nervous that people will balk at this.

How do you all feel about showers for second babies?

Its fine.  Really, it is more about celebrating a new baby and it isn't about "getting stuff".  I make a registry because people ask What do you need? etc. and it is easier just to tell them I have a list on Amazon... I think people typically want to get something for the baby, and if you don't direct them otherwise, you get a lot of clothes!  which are nice, but often get returned/exchanged for other things...

Not for a wrap a Maya wrap which is a sling! I have made my own gauze wraps but I really like my woven better too.

If someone wants to throw you a shower, it's not rude to accept!  If you really feel uncomfortable asking for stuff, you can say "no gifts" or "gifts will be donated to ____" or ask people to buy books to start a library, etc.  Lots of ideas!

Our list is pretty basic.  I'm really trying to keep the amount of stuff we get to a minimum.  The good thing about a spring/summer baby is that you don't need a bunch of clothes, blankets, hats, etc.

Crib + mattress

Sling

Diapers (probably prefolds and wool covers to start with)

Baby washcloths (for wipes)

Waterproof bag for dirty diapers

Muslin swaddling blankets

Onsies

Leggings

Carseat (convertable, not an infant seat)

Cloth nursing pads

Crib sheets

Dresser

Boppy

I think that covers it!

Oops posted to wrong thread....how did that happen?

I assumed it was a thread debating swaddling- and found that I read it as largely in defense of swaddling!  Good reading on a slow night at work, and lovely to know that there are so many thinking mamas (and other caregivers) hanging around MDC...  :)

I don't need a whole lot, actually.  We just need to figure out the sleeping situation, since we got rid of our co-sleeping queen.

As for Seven Slings, I've had them.  They're not slings, they're pouches.  Which means you have to buy the right size, which can be really difficult, particularly when pregnant.  I sold mine because I just don't really care for pouches - I much prefer the adjustability of a RS or a wrap.

I shouldn't need much as this is my third baby and DD2 is only two. However, since I didn't think I'd ever be pregnant again I gave away all the baby clothes. A lot of them were neutral too.

Clothes up to 12 m

bouncy seat (DD1 broke ours.)

ring sling (I have a bunch but I'd like to make a one specifically for this baby.)

cloth wipes (The ones I made for DD1 are very worn by now.)

A new house. This was in the plans before we found out we were expecting. Living space is an issue but I'd also like to have room for a garden and a full basement with a high enough ceiling DH can walk upright. It would also be nice to not be surrounded by the trees that DD1 is allergic to.

I need some advice about car seats.

Is the "travel system" a must when the baby is little? I am thinking about getting convertible car seats for our cars, and using that from day one (with the newborn support padding). We have a used jogging stroller from freecycle - don't know when we can start using that - and are going to get a simple umbrella stroller. I wondered if we can get by using a wrap or some other carrier, and sometimes the umbrella stroller with the padding, when the baby is born. Those pumpkin seats that pop out of the car I guess are convenient, though they seem kind of cumbersome to carry anyway, but is there a reason that everyone seems to get the pumpkin seat/travel system?

IMO, I think those travel systems are a waste of money and space.  We plan on getting a convertible carseat and using a sling/pouch when we're out and about.  We'll get an umbrella stroller when the baby is older.  Those baby seats are SO heavy and awkward to carry around, and I just prefer to carry the baby anyway.

I think most people get them because they don't know there's an alternative.  They just do what the magazines, friends, tv shows, etc. do.  kwim?

That said, we did have one for DD and it was convenient for getting her in and out of the car while sleeping...but that's about it.

I've never had a travel system thingy, and I never carry the carseat around.  But, I do really prefer the bucket seats for the newborn stage.  My babies are bigger at birth (my smallest was 8lb 7oz), and sturdy, and even their legs seem to be in an uncomfortable position in the bigger seats.  My biggest baby was 9lb 6oz, and she was every bit of 6 months old before she seemed comfortable in the convertible seat.  With our fourth, we got a bucket seat that she can fit in much longer, and she's still (at 15mo) perfectly comfortable and content in it.  We'll probably leave her in it until shortly before this baby comes.

I don't have a shopping list for this baby.  Well, I will probably pick up a pack of newborn diapers for the early days.  I honestly can't think of anything else.  That feels strange, but 5 babies in 7 years will do that to you, I guess.

I do, however, have an enormous "to do" list that has a May deadline.  We are making a huge move in August, and I have to get SO much done to make that happen like it needs to.  So much planning, and sorting, and paperwork, and stuff.  I feel like every day from now until the baby comes has a to do list bigger than can be done, but must be.  I am so busy, but yet trying to take care of my body, and enjoy this pg, and my other children.  Today, even though I felt lousy, I went to the chiropractor, painted 5 doors and a bathroom, and wrapped a huge pile of Christmas presents (we haven't had ours with our kids yet).

Tomorrow I have to do the second coat of paint on the bathroom, and the back of the doors, and finish wrapping presents.  I have to sort through the stuff in the kids' room, and rearrange it.  And I have to clean our house top to bottom because a realtor is coming on Wednesday.  I also am going to have to thaw some meat and start cooking again.  And I need to play with my kids.  Dh has been helping so much the last few days, but he goes back to work tomorrow, so I'm on my own.   Whew.

they are super bulky strollers (the SUV of strollers) while i'm not a fan, we got one with DD. we have a small car and stroller barely fits in the trunk. what i like about the stroller though is for a day out (like the zoo) because i would use it more for storage (diaper bag, blankets, ect) so i don't have to make a trip back to the car for anything. this is the only time i use the stroller.

I know the bucket seats are suppose to be safer for infants, but i hate, and will not, carrying them around; just bulky and heavy. on the plus side, it's nice if baby's sleeping and you don't want to wake the LO up. I also like bucket seats because it gets super hot where i live (like 115 in the summer) and I can just keep the seat in the house so it's not so bad getting into the car.

If you decide to get one, it's really important to consider the type of car you have. I wouldn't say the travel system is a "must have" item, we're not going to buy a new one for this baby but we will need a new car seat and DH is set on getting a new bucket where i am okay with just getting a convertible.

just thinking about what we need and my list seems very short:

a new carseat

4-5 new pocket diapers since our BG 3.0 didn't make it through one kid who stopped wearing them at 15 months :(

cloth nursing pads, making them so just some fabric for this project

some kind of sling (either ring or pouch)

i just have the convertible car seat... i guess if we decide we need the bucket seat we can get it later :)

i have a super long list! this is our first baby so we have nothing. i just finished buying most of the stuff i wanted for cloth diapering, except i want a coffee dispenser to keep warm water in, and i need to make a few more wash cloths with some flannel i got for that + burp cloths. anyhow, my list is like 5 pages long ;) it's mostly stuff like crib, bouncer/sleeper, swaddling blankets, crib sheets, mattress protector for our bed, rocker & nursing stool, hooded towels, baby tylenol, aquaphor, dr bonners baby mild, cotton swabs, lanolin, clothes (currently thrifting with my mom--so far i got about 70+ items in a range of sizes--the thrifts here in california are great), charlie's soap, biokleen, nursing pads, nursing bras, fenugreek, mother's milk tea, boppy, moby, ergo.... plus i can't resist some fun, impractical things like ABC books (my husband got me ABC 3D for xmas!) and stuffed animals (well, i bought one, an organic bunny that was on sale at wild dill). and i'm making a few things--a quilt with a minky backing--so soft! and felt shoes and so on. we're going to go and get some of the major stuff at ikea when i get home--we got some visa giftcards for xmas & it pretty much covers the crib & shelf thing & miscellaneous stuff i was thinking of getting.

this is what we do, too!  and what do you do when baby inevitably fusses in the bucket carseat--then you have to take baby out and carry a car seat and baby.  Ugh.  I prefer to take baby out and out in sling/pouch, etc....

Sometimes it is nice to have a place to put baby down when sleeping, but that doesn't happen very frequently when they're small anyway... so the stroller is just a pain.
