Hi Casmer, A Mei tei made of linen or cotton would be wonderful for hot weather I bet.

A cotton gauze wrap is also nice and light and cool in the summer. Even an ergo or similar can be alright with a larger baby; there's a bit more airflow once htey push back and look around a bit more. We definitely get into the 90's here in the summer and I've been babywearing through the last 3 summers now... wait, 2 summers? Ergh, now I'm confused. Anyway.

Re: carseat safety- I agree that a shopping thread is a good place to put safety. If I said I wanted to get a drop-sided crib and it was on my shopping list, or I was getting a crib from my in-laws that had some oddly spaced spindles in the rails I'd expect someone to be like, "yo, that was recalled, you don't want that!" or "new regulations say that the spindles need to be x-distance apart to prevent strangulation and head entrapment" because it's just good sense! I'd be horrified if something terrible happened and everyone here was like, "oh, yeah, I thought that might happen... but I didn't want to offend you." I think carseats are the same thing. There ARE dangers to leaving a baby in a carseat for an extended period of time, or leaving a baby to sleep unattended in a swing or bouncer and I think it's good sense to point it out to new moms who maybe haven't seen it on the news or seen items being recalled or read the articles about the dangers. We're not saying you WILL do it, or that you're not AP for wanting a bouncer chair or letting a baby nap in a swing.

The flat head concern can happen even to very AP'd babies- babies who want to sleep alone in a crib and who prefer a specific position can get a flat spot. I remember being HORRIFIED when my second-born lost all the hair at the back of his head because i thought I'd somehow failed as an AP parent and i wasn't holding him enough, but he didn't LIKE being snuggled so I was following his needs- that's what's important. If baby prefers naps in the swing (while you are around to keep an eye on head position and breathing) then do it. If the only way your baby will sleep is in the car seat after driving around for awhile, then do it. We all do what we need to or feel is right or what our babies need and that's the only way to survive this motherhood adventure. Getting offended when someone points out some information you maybe haven't heard before is a bit over the top, IMO. I know we're all hormonal and touchy, but giving people the benefit of the doubt never hurts.

On the other hand, I've also known babies who travelled in the bucket seat, stayed in the bucket wherever they were, got a bottle or paci if they started fussing and weren't picked up, transported home in the bucket to transfer to the crib- still in the bucket seat- to nap there, then had another bottle in the bucket seat... etc etc. Some people don't use the bucket as a tool or something for convenience to bring a sleeping baby into the store but as a... i don't know. Crutch? Artificial arms? I don't expect anyone here to do that, but THOSE are the kinds of situations you need to be cautious of for flat spots, babies who aren't being held enough, and asphyxia.

I think it's a bit crazy that there was 2 pages of getting offended/reoffending nonsense on a shopping thread, but hey! That's how forums full of preggos go, right?

Definitely do some looking into the crotch dangling too. Not only is it not good for baby but it also puts unneeded stress on mama's back because the center of gravity is all out of whack. A baby bjorn can be pretty darned expensive, why not pay an extra $40 and get something that won't make you want to cry after an hour? I used one for the first couple of months with my daughter, and even a 10 lb baby gave me pressure points and sore spots and she started wailing after 10 minutes because it was uncomfortable for her, too.

On the padded sling thing I meant padded around the baby to clarify but obvs if you have experience with it it is fine, I just caution new users b/c of the added suffocation from padding especially in a cradle hold. Froggy position on the chest is best. Just wanted to clarify.

On another note I am trying to figure out sleeping arrangements. How do you sleep with a 2 y/o and a newborn? I'm mostly concerned for naps b/c if I am lucky enough they sleep at the same time it will be in our bed and then what? Move the baby?

Has anyone ever used the ergo with the infant insert?  Once DS was big enough the Ergo became my favorite baby gear item - but I never had it with the insert when he was a baby.  He was never happy in regular slings and I was too overwhelmed to figure out the Moby Wrap eyesroll.gif so I'm wondering if this time around I should purchase the infant insert for the ergo?

Thanks!

I was wondering the exact same thing as Rozziemama- please help! I have never had an Ergo but that is the way that I am leaning this time :)

Linnie: The Ergo is really great. I honestly think I could carry my 34 pound 3 year old in there on my back right now (if he were interested and I were not hugely pregnant!).

I think I might go with the infant insert to simplify my baby gear purchases but wanted to know how easy/hard it is to use if any mamas have used it out there...

I'm thinking about the Ergo infant insert as well, and will be interested in hearing from other about this. Used the Ergo with DS from the time he was six months (without the insert) and LOVED IT. Before that I used a Maya and hated it. Thinking of trying the Moby this time around as well.

I'm a wrap girl all the way! Wovens are my thing really but my Ergo is OK. Like it for the past 1 stage. I won't be getting an insert.

Psst I work for Moby, so if anyone wants one and doesn't get one at their shower, let me know :)  I have access to open samples and can help you with a good deal.  They're great for newborns (I'm just a little biased though!)

I want one, I want one, I WANT ONE! I live in Canada- how can we set this up? This is so exciting. I never used a wrap for my first two and I am really committed to using one this time around.

ooh, please help me choose a couple good wovens to start with! I like what I've read about Girasol but I wonder if it's cushy enough for a newborn (if I buy it soon and break it in a bit). I figure a 4.2 or 4.6m would work to start (average/small build)?

That's awesome!!! Do you have like 9 million of them for yourself yet? I would. :P

My daughter was a maya wrap baby (from as soon as she was out of the hospital until she was almost 3!), but I really want a moby wrap for this little guy.

Wow! So... Are you able to help figure out how to use them as well? Virtual moby lessons? orngtongue.gif

sosurreal - I'm trying to figure out the same logistics.  Not helped by the fact that the 2 yo is not STTN.  In fact he tends to get up for the day between 4 and 5.  Not something I want him imposing on a NB.

I LOVED my Moby with DS.  Love, love, love.  I was so bummed when he started refusing it at 3 mos.

Maryam - that's why I'm checking out the BWing group, so I can try some wraps.  One of the leaders of the group confirmed that they do have woven wraps in their lending library, so she'll be bringing them so I can check them out.  You can always borrow my toddler if you want to try them.  I'm sure there will also be some smaller babies there to try it with (since my guy is so heavy).

Rozzie - check out Youtube for videos on wrapping the Moby.  Get your Moby and a stuffie, stand in front of your computer, pick a wrap and try it.  Rewind, try again.  Rewind, try again.  Do it until you can get it on.  Then work on getting it tight.  Once you have one wrap down, then you can check out others if you like, but I honestly never needed more than 1, since I could only use the Moby the first 3 mos.  But I got to the point I could get him out of the car seat and into the Moby in about 60 seconds, IIRC.  It's not nearly as hard as it seems at first - there's just a learning curve.  My carry of choice was a Kangaroo carry variant - which ties the baby onto your body, instead of tying and then inserting (which I had trouble getting the hang of).  I can't seem to find the video I used, but I never folded the fabric in half, and I had him facing sideways instead of tummy2tummy (like you see in the cradle hold videos).

ETA - Pretty sure this is the video I used.  I wound up holding him in a slightly different position (I think I have bigger boobs than she does, so I'd nestle him between the girls), but this is the wrap.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-gTJl6JZRg&feature=BFa&list=PLF276F4CDD30CC4FA&lf=results_video

Strollers - Anyone here have a BOB stroller?  A friend just bought a two-seater and is selling her single for half of what they paid, which is cheaper than anything I've seen on Craigslist.  The reason I am looking at something like this is because there are a ton of lovely trails around Austin and I think sometime like the BOB would hold up nicely.  Should I do it?

If you think you'll use it (and have somewhere to store it), I'd jump on it.  Double check the shape it's in though, that you feel it's worth that price.  And if you have to transport it to get to where you'll use it, make sure it'll fit easily in your car.

Just keep in mind that jogging strollers aren't usually appropriate for a baby under 6 mos though.

I'm actually looking at having to buy a double BOB, since it's the only one I can find that can handle my toddler.

I'm happy to help with Mobying :)  I don't have a million wraps yet - in fact, after all these years of working here I really can't decide which color/style is most "me"!  I'm sure I'll have a bunch ultimately though.

So shopping-wise, I'm all set on carriers but nothing else!  My youngest is 7, so I have NO baby gear and even when you're a minimalist, that still involves quite a bit.  I think my biggest question is where will baby nap?  We'll co-sleep at night but we don't know where baby will sleep during the daytime (when not in a Moby of course!)?  Pack n Play? Moses basket? Bouncy chair? small downstairs crib? I don't want to buy something with too short a lifespan.  Has anyone solved with particular question?

Since we kept DS upstairs with us at night, we ended up getting a pack-in-play for him to nap in during the day. He loved it and slept well in it, and we also used it for naps while visiting or traveling. I think they have the longest lifespan compared to a bouncy chair or swing, which they can only use until they sit up. I'm really looking forward to having it with the new baby, now that I have a toddler running around. I know some mamas never use them, but for me it's a huge relief to have a safe place to put the baby down during the day if needed.

I am getting a packnplay this time. I need a place for baby to sleep when we are not cosleeping. Anyone have a brand they reccomend?

Well yesterday I had a sewathon and I added the following to my stash.

50 cloth wipes
30 Cloth Diapers (already sewn, I just pulled them from last years prints since the new shipment of prints will be coming soon)
4 Receiving Blankets
4 burp rags

Please don't give me flack for this but I ripped all the seams and I am changing out the fabric on my Britax. I am keeping all the same padding, and thickness and  just using cotton fabric instead of synthetic.

I was happy it only took me an hour to make all those, but it was easy serging through.
