Moving to Charlotte 4/12, will be 4mo pregnant - need advice

After deciding to move to Charlotte I discovered I'm pregnant (for the first time), due in late August.  I need some advice on birth centers, LLL groups and other groups in the Charlotte area.  I believe will be looking to move somewhere just South of Charlotte.  Thanks for any help!

HI & Happy New Year!

There is a birth center in Ft. MIll, SC, and one up in Statesville, NC. The one in Ft mIll is operated/the midwives are SC licensed midwives. The one up in Statesville, NC is owned by an OB and she and 2  Certified Nurse-Midwives do the prenatals & births. I am a Certified Nurse Midwife doing homebirths, only, (and of course regular full scope nurse-midwifery/women's healthcare) covering a 2 hour radius of Hickory & all of Charlotte and beyond, even into Peachland & down into SC is w/in that radius. I have midwifed at many births in the Charlotte & surrounding areas.

Hope this info is giving you some paths to pursue.

Blessings,

Karen Benfield, CNM & Owner of BirthTender Midwifery

oH, also, the Charlotte area has a few LLL groups located in town & around the suburbs. Also, lots of homeschooling support groups.

Welcome to the area!

hi there -- we used the birth center in fort mill and had a fantastic experience in May 2011.  I am sure by now you've checked out their website, but just in case not: http://carolinabirth.org/.  We really loved it and drove an hour to get there from where we lived at the time.  As far as I've heard, all the midwives are very good and professional.  We worked with Christine who was excellent. Very laid back and fun but definitely knew her stuff.  I can't overemphasize how wonderful using the center was. I am so glad we had that option and did not have to use a hospital. (but there is one nearby if needed!)

I also VERY HIGHLY recommend taking a Bradley Birth Class. We went to the one taught by Susan Meyer: http://www.bradleybirth.com/susanmyers.  This was such a great experience for both my husband and I.  If you happen to be a single mom, I still highly recommend this class as you will learn more here than by reading books or talking to doctors. It will really put your mind at ease about the birth process by way of actually really understanding it and that you CAN do it!

I'd be happy to share more if needed,  best to you ...

Just wanted to say, we are in Tega Cay SC, 5 minutes from the birth center in Fort Mill. I know several of the wonderful people there personally. GREAT staff really doing it for all the right reasons. I will say though, if you in SC you can use several of those same midwives for a homebirth if you prefer that. Also there are some midwives outside of that center that will practice in NC for homebirths too. I personally had two HB's and will most likely have more. For us it was the right choice. I pray your move was peaceful and you adjust quickly to the area. It's a wonderful place to live and raise a family. Lots of wonderful people here. God Bless you in this time of your life. What a sweet sweet time to be in! Feel free to contact me personally for more info on midwives and your options for the area. God Bless! Oh and I wanted to second another poster about classes for natural birth. I have heard great things about Susan's class and the birth center does a class too that is free. Not as in depth but free.

Thank you all for reaching out!  I'm moving next week, meeting my DP there who just pulled out with the moving truck.  After getting everything tied up here, we're ready to start planning our next steps.  We will be in Belmont, NC.  I have been checking out all the links that were sent.  Thanks so much!

Alexas, I am going to be delivering with Lisa Johnson too, I have my first appointment with her tomorrow.  I met her when I did the tour of the birth center.  Also, I noticed your daughter's middle name is Quinn, that is going to be out little girl's first name, Quinn Elinor. It is nice to hear from someone from my area!

I am, I haven't had a chance to see too much of it yet, since any spare time has been spent trying to get everything with the house settled.  But I really like what I've seen so far.
