dwindling supply?

Thread Starter

We quasi-night-trained our 13 mo dd about a month ago and in the past several weeks I've been noticing my supply seems greatly diminished. She still nurses once a night and at all the same times during the day as she has done for about the past 4 months (upon waking, before both naps, and at bedtime). She's recently begun eating more solids, but until the milk started running low, she'd always nurse lustily until she conked out. Now I notice there is a lot less gulping, I can hardly tell when I let down, and often now she just breaks the latch while wide awake (after sucking for a while with what seems like little return). We do just one breast at a time & have done ever since she was tiny and I had oversupply/fast letdown issues; at this point it just seems to confound her when I offer up the other breast.

So I've experimented with oatmeal, from which I've definitely seen results in the past, but this time it hasn't helped. I eat a mostly vegetarian diet with a little fish, so could possibly be low on iron despite all the beans & greens... so I could try an iron supplement. Currently drinking a mug of Mother's Milk tea -- I had to go buy another box b/c I'd given mine away months ago, sure I'd never ever need it!

Getting her to sleep was the best thing we did for our relationship (and I mean mama-baby!!!) and I'm happy that she's finally interested in solid food (she gained no weight between 9 & 12 months and our very crunchy, pro-bfing ped suggested I ought to offer it more often... seems to have worked). But I really wanted to nurse at least until 18 months and longer if possible, and I'm really terrified that things are just drying up. I'd be grateful for any advice and/or insight you have...

If you don't want to increase her night nursing, can you increase her day nursing?  Are you still offering every couple hours during the day?

It is VERY common (and healthy!) for kids' weight to plateu somewhere in the 9-12 month range as they become more active.  My DD gained no weight from 10-15 months and was perfectly healthy--- it was just a combination of increased activity *and* her natural body size/shape taking over.

Good luck.
