What are your favorite read-alouds or your kids' favorite independent reads for ages 7-10? Classic literature as well as contemporary, too.

My daughter, 8, just discovered The Boxcar Children and loooves them! She has been reading the Great Illustrated Classics children's abridged versions of classic books like Robinson Crusoe, Little Women, etc. and just flies through them.

That's fantastic that she loves all those old classics. My son really likes the more contemprorary books, but we try to get him to read classics too, or at least abridged versions of them for kids like "A Christmas Carol" which he loved (because of the ghosts!)

Here are some good ones:

The Chronicles of Narnia

Anne of Green Gables series

Little House series

Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys

Black Beauty

There's also the Classic Starts books that have ones like The Odyssey, Great Expectations, Frankenstein...

Other favs:

Books by Andrew Clements (most of these take place in a school, but we love them)
