Koru - I haven't chopped off my dreads, but when I do, I envision a "pixie" type of hairstyle. I've sported this hairstyle for years before my dreaded days, so I'm not worried about it, but if you've never had super short hair before, it'll be different! But so fun!! I imagine your head will feel so LIGHT after cutting them off.

Scruffy, I definitely love short hair! This whole dreaded adventure started when I was this/close to cutting my long hair but decided to try the locs beforehand. I'm just nervous about it looking half straight and half knotted!? I watched a few youtube videos about combing them out & I think I can undo the parts that are knotted at the root. Oh, the experiences life brings.
I'm seeing all my "dread wives" tomorrow (the friends who knotted up my hair) and I want to pull out a pair of scissors & have them each cut a honorary dread off my head to complete their journey with me.
(Not to keep, though. Ha! Just as a symbol).
I need about 25 more photos of me with dreads, though. I need to remember this time, in it's fullest! (Even though I can see how people do it over again because I'm already thinking about chopping my hair, growing it to about 5 inches & trying cropped locs for a while).

Scroll up a few posts to see what i had before cutting them.My sister cut mine in half and used a dematting dog comb and it took 7 hours, but i was left with a chin length bob. You will see a LOT of hair but don't panic, it is all the hair that you lost naturally that was in the dread. We also used a HEAVY conditioner in it while she was combing as a lubricant. BTW, I had dreads for 3 years before doing this and they we VERY tight and needle felted. Two days later i had a hairdresser just tidy up the ends and cut a few more inches off. Here is my results.

Looks great, BuddhaMom! 7 hours, huh? Do I have that in me? I can't even decide if I want to be done!? One minute I'm messing with my locs, wishing they were gone and the next minute I'm talking on the phone, realizing I've spent 10 minutes fiddling & playing with them like they're my best friends.
Has anyone cut theirs & regretted it instantly??

Not at first. My head felt so light and it was easier to sleep at night. Mine were so thick and hard it was like sleeping on pipes *LOL* I would like them back now and think of how long they would have been by now. I wish I had know there was a dread salon near me so I could have had them halved and then they wouldn't have been so thick. But at 42, I feel I am probably too old to start the journey again, besides, as you can see in my signature i am growing my hair out from a 1.5 in. pixie.

I can't do it! (At least not today). I was all set to chop them off but then I kept thinking that I'll surely regret the decision a week or two down the road. And from all that I've read, it takes a good year for locs to be fully established & I'm only at month 9. They seem fully established to me...with a few places that refuse to knot up & wispy hair everywhere....but maybe they'll be different in 3 months.
Love seeing the pics!

Buddhamom - I know exactly what you mean about dreads and sleep!! At best, I feel as though I'm sleeping on rope, at worst, on pipes. And they're so scratchy on my back! And my latest pet peeve is when I'm laying on my side and they're trapped between my ribs and the bed - itchy AND pipe-like. I'm thinking of trimming them by 6 inches or so and hoping that solves some of the issues.
Also, does anyone ever worry that they'll wrap around your neck while you sleep? I go through phases where I'm very paraniod about this and keep them braided in bed, then months where I don't even think about it.

Becky, they're coming along!!
The scratchiness bothers me so much. This was my main peeve over the summer during tank top weather. If I didn't have my hair up, it felt like my back was being scratched raw! With the cooler weather in Chicagoland, my clothes are protecting me from this constant irritation. ![]()
And my locs are long but not so much that I feel like they'll strangle me at night. Haha! Those are some serious dreads! I have to sleep with my hair draped up over the pillow, if that makes any sense. I did the same with my straight hair, too. I absolutely cannot wear anything in my hair while sleeping & I've tried it all. Bandanas, silky hair scarves, scrunchies, etc. If I roll around too much they get scratchy all over my face but I tolerate that more than something in my hair. I think wearing them up would lessen the loose frizzies but it just doesn't work for me. Ah well.
These past couple of days I've been giving my locs some special love & have definitely decided to keep them for a while longer. I mastered the art of crocheting them (which wasn't easy....at least not for me!) and I've managed to tighten up quite a few. I've also been able to incorporate a lot of the loose random hairs. All this time spent fiddling with my locs has caused me to fall in love again.
It also helps that when I've mentioned the possibility of cutting them off, all my family & friends say, "No! Don't do it!" Apparently this 'do suits me well & I'm lovin' that thought.
So, I press on!

Thx. Even pulled back into a low pony tail, they're still touching the crack of my ass (and therefore my whole back and able to wrap all around). I'm not really looking for a solution, just bitchin'.
Koru - great decision to keep your dreads. Before the first year, you really can't tell how they'll turn out (IMO).

Yep, a year. That was my original plan and it'll be a year in January. It also doesn't make sense to cut them right before winter hits anyway!

LOL!!! Thanks Becky! I plan on it, just have to work up the courage. I do regular trims whenever I'm bored, but haven't been "bored" in a while (18 weeks prego with my first, DSS is demanding a lot of attention lately, building an addition on the house, etc...) The next "trim" will be a good 6 inches off of each and every single dread. At least. Then I will have all "naturally" dreaded hair (I can tell where the dreads that I backcombed 6 years ago end and the "real" ones begin and it's about 5 inches from the bottom.)

I was looking through my facebook pictures, trying to find a decent one of my dreads to share, but you know what? There's not a lot of pictures (read: none) of my back... ![]()
Anyway, found a nice one of my hair braided from three years ago.
I hadn't dyed it, just certain dreads get more sun and bleach out. For the last 2 years, I've been using henna on my hair, so this is from before that.

They are definitely gorgeous! So tell me, when do they stop looking so loopy? (Because yours look so amazingly thick & loc'd!) I realize the loops form because the hair is knotted all the way up but I'm wondering if they stop looping once they're more firmly established. For a few months I embraced the loops but now they're starting to annoy me. I've been doing my best to crochet the huge loops & incorporate them. It's working pretty well actually and I'm no where near wanting to chop them like the past weeks!
