~~ Dready Mamas 2012?~~ - Page 17

This thread has gone hella far and so have many of your locks. I love the way all of your dreads are turning out! I'm so stoked becky and rjuriz that you took the leap and joined us on our dreadie journies. I have been too lazy to crochet or even palm roll the past month so my dreads are looking nappier than they did over the summer but right now I don't really care. Koru, I am glad you are sticking to keeping locked at least a year. Scruffy I love your phat locks and hope mine get chunkier before I chop them off agin.

I have removed dreads in several different fashions. I have cut off just the tips and spent hours using dog dematter spray and 'slicker' brushes to unlock almost all of my hair, this resulted in long hair full of split ends that I ended up cutting short anyways. I have cut off the locks in their entirerty leaving about an inch of roots. I have cut them halfway off and combed from there. I think the most presentable choice was stopping locking the roots for about a month so there was about two or three inches of non knotted hair accomplished by using conditioner on my roots, then I cut a few inches down from that and begain a couple week long process of conditioning and gently removing the knots. This left much less split ends than the other times but it was very time consuming and tedious..

Mamayogibear, I can't believe you've had dreads so many times!! I anticipate this being my only dreaded journey, however long it lasts. Today I feel like it will be until death....but ask me tomorrow. Lol! Change is something I thrive on but maybe I'll focus my energy on furniture rearranging to get my fix. :)

Scruffy, your locs are LONG. Wow! I bet it feels good to cut them a few inches but then again, maybe it doesn't even feel different.

I'm proud to say that I think I've hit a peek and am feeling the love. Maybe it's due to the time I invested with crocheting & palm rolling last weekend but I've gotten so many compliments lately. My locs are feeling much neater & tighter & all around more tolerable. The tolerance level is definitely related to the colder weather and shirts that cover my neck because I'm reminded of their scratchiness when I put on my PJs. I'm continually surprised at my kids ability to lay all over them. Ha! My one daughter has always loved to play with my hair while sucking her thumb & she hasn't let up. And she's very olfactory, passionately connecting with scents, so she smells them while she's fiddling & sucking her thumb. It's really quite sweet even though it sounds odd writing it.

Any favorite places to buy tams? I have a few hats that still fit by big hair but would like to get a couple cute tams. Etsy, maybe?

I crochet hats / tams for my dreads.  I'm a knitter, and it's the only thing I can crochet.  I make them from the middle/centre and work out, so that they are big enough for my big head.

Hi, mamas! I have just read through all of this (and the 2010) thread. How is it possible that I had that much time? I'll tell you- I barely slept last week obsessing over dreads. :giggle:

Here are my dread-babies. About a month old! :)

Sorry they are sideways...don't know how to fix that.

So? I think I love them. Of course some days they don't look this good- just trying to be patient.

I did twist and rip (ish) and then some interlocking (because I didn't know what it was and it kinda just happened when my hands were playing in there) and now I am just leaving well enough alone!

and here are DD's, obviously just neglect (but they are sectioning out nice and even).

She decided she wanted to let hers dread, too. So, who am I to stop her? She just turned 5. She now has a couple beads, and one pink thread wrap. <3

Nice to "meet" you all!

I'm sorry to say that I'm almost done removing my dreads. I hated how they were turning out. I'm going to give my hair some time to "recuperate" and do the neglect method.

Bummer! I had the bottom half of my hair done 4yrs ago, then took it out. I'm much happier with them the second time around using no wax & having a friend help me section my hair better.

Yeah. I lost so. much. hair! I'm still having post partum hair loss, so that, plus that stuff coming loose from taking out my dreads..... I probably could've donated enough hair for 1/3 of a wig! Anyway, I am excited for the neglect method, so that it'll all just happen naturally. My scalp wasn't healthy enough for me to do dreads. That's one of my regrets. Not waiting until I had a healthy scalp. (not using residue free shampoos, waiting for less hairloss, etc) At least this is info I can pass on to others. :)

MJoKirk, your hair looks fabulous. Keep us updated on your progress. And Becky, so sorry it didn't work out this time around but it sounds like you have a few things figured out & you'll be ready to try again soon!

Thank you, Koru! I've been thinking about doing neglect with my daughter. Her hair gets so tangled so easily and I never remember to brush it. But I know my husband wouldn't be happy with me AT ALL. She has his red hair and he wouldn't want that for her.

Don't be sorry! It was a growing experience where you realized that you do want dreadlocks so much you are willing to face the months of crazy non dreaded neglected hair to journey to dreadlocks. That is one good thing about twist and rip, if you take them out within the first couple of months it's pretty easy compared to backcombed and crochet locks. Congrats on choosing to be a dreaddy mama and choosing your own journey!

My dd is the same, she had a few neglect locks last spring but after a while wanted them out:( She keeps saying she want dreadlocks when she is older though!

Wow, I love your lovley long locks! It's awesome that you started with such long hair. I started with short hair and my locks keep getting wider instead of longer, lol.

Your dd's dreads rock! I love little kids with dreadlocks, there soo cute.

So, a while back I was complaining about those little white things in my hair... A friend said they looked like split ends??? I have never been a hair person, so I don't even know what that means. They are really driving me nuts. I am only really comfy going out if I have a headband or sunglasses to cover the roots (the worst area) I wish I could figure out how to get rid of these....

Those are the hair follicles, (roots), of your hair. When your hair sheds it sheds the follicle as well which is on the tip of the strand. The stray hair gets caught up in the dread with the follicles along with it. It's perfectly normal and unavoidable unfortunately. The darker your hair the more noticeable it will be.

Bleh... I am thinking of bleaching it just so they won't be as noticeable (until it grows out again...)

I love playing with bleached dreadies. A couple of sets ago I bleached my locks and died them according to the holidays, lol

I'm so tempted to bleach my current set but think it would clash with my attempt to be mature and responsible. Although I could just dye the top ones and then they would be covered by the outer ones when pulled up...

Thanks! :) I imagine they won't stay that long. I haven't lost any length, really, at all. Some in the back are pretty tight (the few I "started" first- so they are close to 2 months old now) and they are noticeably shorter.

So excited to be on this journey!

I'm a little sad that I took mine out, cuz I would've liked to bleach and color my hair for the holidays. Oh well. Next year, right?

Everyone's dreads are lookin' great!  Becky, I'm so sorry it didn't work out this time.  Were you using your bs as a paste?   We are a no poo family, and my teens who have really oily hair respond well to the paste, rather than a more watery solution.  Plus, we find the acv is a must in helping it all balance out--just on the ends, not the scalp.

Here's a sorta recent pic of mine.  We had a huge "Crunchstock" party w/a booby pinata and everything, lol.  We were sampling home brewed hard apple peach cider.

When I first started out, I was using it as a more watery solution and it led to OIL CENTRAL. Then I started using it as paste and it got better. When I took them out, the part closest to the roots was so oily and gross.

I love your hair!
