My 6 month old just bit me really hard about 4 days ago. Instead of getting better, it seems to be getting worse. There is a break in the skin on the nipple and it seems to be swollen. It is painful when he latches and during nursing. The pain now seems to be inside the breast. What do I do? It is very painful and I am beginning to dread nursing on that side. This is my third child, so I know how to stop the biting and he hasn't been doing it. I have never experienced this type of an injury from biting. I have calls out to my midwives and the lactation consultant for help, but I have not heard back from anyone yet.

Hey mama...I had open wounds on both nipples due to DS biting me in the beginning, and I SWEAR by All Purpose Nipple Ointment, Dr. Jack Newman's got the Rx on his website, you'll need a compounding pharmacy...it actually GREW skin for me. Seriously, and it combats inflamation and pain, but take ibuprofen too, that will help!!
Good luck, hope you're feeling better soon :)
post #3 of 41/13/12 at 5:56pmI think the same thing just happened to me to as I suddenly have pain in one nipple.
I dont' have any solutions other than some lansinoh. Sorry!!!! I hope you feel better soon.
Thanks for your suggestions. I wanted to try the all purpose ointment, but don't have a convenient compounding pharmacy. I actually ended up having some yellow pus show at the site of the cut which concerned me. I wanted to avoid antibiotics if possible, my lactation consultant suggested applying a small amount of polysporin after each nursing in an effort to avoid progression of the infection and antibiotics. I did this for three days and the pain in the breast and all redness healed.
