Mamas who have experience with major food allergies I could really use your help! Here is the long story...
I have a DS who is 16 months old. He was EBF'ed until he was 7 months, which is when we introduced solids. He had grown fine up until 6 months (always a peanut but following a growth curve). Then from 6months to 1 yr he didnt grow at all! He didnt gain weight, grow in height, or head circ. He was still BFed that whole time, but was never a huge eater and always picky with solids. ( never your baby who cant wait for the next bite). His stools were normal, no spitting up or colic. So at 1 yr the dr put him on a high cal. diet, thinking my milk may not be great and he doesnt eat enogh. She had me adding butter and heavy cream to everything possible. The first week that started he lost 4 oz and broke out with a littke eczema on his face. So she sent him for blood work...11 viles!!...checked all major things..all normal, except a little anemic. In the next week on diet he lost3 more oz. She sent us to a ped. gastro who went over everything and thought it was just a mix of behavior (very picky) and not willing to eat enough. she set up strict eating routine and kept him on high cal diet. In 2 weeks he gained 2 oz...we went back for 2 months every wk, in total over that time he gained6 oz, that was not ok to them over 2 months. Meanwhile, his eczema started covering his entire face, he started spitting up almost every day (would cry right before like he was in pain), and became very fussy, and much more clingy to me. Every week i brought it up...she wanted him on zantac....asked if i wiped his face after feeding him....always dismissed food allergies when i brought it up at each visit. Finally i tried eliminating myself. I took him off dairy and in 4 days his eczema was75% gone. no more spitting up, and my happy boy was back.
I took him to a guy who does biofeed back who has helped me many times and when we hooked him up within 3 sec 4 food sensitivites came up: wheat, dairy, sugar, corn.(not able to process them so not getting nutrients from them) So i obviously took him off those foods. In the next 2 weeks he gained 12 oz ( the most 10 months!) so i thought we solved it. now i had to deal with the dr. she said she knows nothing of this machine, but she didnt want me taking him off wheat, corn or sugar. She did a blood allergy test and all came out negitive. I took him off the food anyway and he has been doing great....BUT...just took him for a weight check and in a month he only gained 3 oz, they feel is too little. So im wondering if there are more developing sensitivites....i got a referal for the skin allergy test. But here...finally...are my questions. Is this test accurate? is there a specific one to ask for? will it show intolerances?....its so hard trying to work with the dr when what i feel is the real cause isnt showing up "medically". I just want to find something they will look at as accurate that will give me real answers. He is 16 1/2 months and just reached 16 lbs. The thing is though, other than size he is great. Not sickly ( although he does wake up congested every morning...another sign its allergies), never had any infections, waling, talking, and one of the happiest babies i know.
If anyone could answer some of my questions or give any insight on this situation i would be so grateful. I cannot tell you the stress and worry this has brought me. I just want my little guy to get better and grow!!
