Joined as a supporter but still seeing lots of ads

I'm happy to support MDC and don't begrudge paying the supporter rate.  I am curious though if I'm supposed to still see banner ads, a right margin large ad, and a series of small ads in the "featured sponsors" category?   Some of these ads are totally obnoxious and I was hoping that joining as a supporter would make them go away.  Is there something I need to do to reset my browser, something wrong with the site, or did I misunderstand the effect of being a low-tier ($30) supporter?

You need to turn the ads off. :)  Head up to the "My Profile" link at the top in the purple nav bar and click on that. From there, click on the "Edit Account Details" button on the upper right hand corner.  Scroll all the way down to the bottom to the "Advertising Preference" section and then click the button next to Turn Off Ads, then click the green "Save" button right below that.  That should turn off your ads.
