Teeth. Ouch.

I have a 13-month-old. We're down to naps and nighttime for nursing. In almost all respects I'm thrilled with our current nursing relationship, and we overcame huge challenges (tongue tie, thrush, recurrent plugged ducts to the point where I weaned him off that side completely) to get here.

But the teeth. Oh, the teeth! He was late to get them and now he's making up for lost time. And no matter what I try to do to soothe his poor mouth before nursing, he chews on me. He's never had a great latch, and he likes to brace his arms against me and arch backwards. Our nursing sessions are no longer relaxing bonding times. I'm tense, and he can tell, which makes him antsy, which makes him want to nurse for 2389324 times longer, which makes me even more tense, etc. It's messing up our sleep.

I'm actually considering giving him bottles in the nighttime, which I'd really rather not do. But on the nights when his dad takes care of him (so obviously bottles), his wakings are brief and peaceful. On my nights he's up for hours at a time, unable to settle.

Sorry for the long-winded rant. Any ideas here?

Is there any chance you're having supply issues since you're nursing so rarely?  Are you pumping at all?  He might be getting frustrated with the flow.  Is he taking bottles during the day?  You could have him use slower flow nipples in the hopes it would make him view the flow at the breast as more normal.

It sounds like you are actively weaning him?  How much longer are you hoping to nurse?
