Baby positions...fun with baby mapping - Page 4

My babe is firmly head down all the time, but butt changes from side to side.  My last midwife said that ROA babies tend to be born with the fastest labors.  DS2 was ROA at the beginning of labor and was born in 2.5 hours, so it seemed to me she knew what she was talking about!

I too love it when my midwife lays hands on my belly.  It really feels to me like she is laying hands on the baby, which makes me feel that much more connected.  Last appointment, she said, "Oh!  Hello little hand!" and she guided my hand to where she could feel babe's hand up by his/her face.  Of course I felt nothing.  Folks here in town call her "Ultrasound Hands." I love that she can even predict weight and head size.

SO apparently hanging upside down like a bat for the last 2 weeks made a difference (or at least I'm telling myself it did). Baby is now firmly head-down and in position! Yay!

My midwife did an ultrasound today to confirm it, even thought she could feel and be 99% sure. She said that last week a baby was breech, but the positioning had managed to fool 2 midwives, an OB and a doula. The mom was in active labor when it was discovered. I think after that experience (her first like that in 30 years) she decided better safe than sorry with me. :)  It was all fine - I got to see my baby and note that it has the same chubby cheeks and pointy little chin as my daughter & husband. It was a very positive visit.

I love the idea of Ultrasound hands.

I'm super impressed with you ladies for being able to figure out baby positioning.  I have NO idea what part of the baby is where and i seems as though I feel movement all over the place... I'm really curious though and hope that maybe as the baby gets bigger it will become more obvious.

Yippee, MW appointment today so I'll get verification of my suspicions!

Yesterday's midwife appt was pretty great. She was surprised he was all bunched up on my right side ROT, leaving my left empty (and people keep making cracks about me having twins!) so gave me a few exercises to do. I spent about 5 minutes in the open knee chest position, which wasn't easy, and did some lunges. He scurried over to the center, posterior. So I planted a bunch of strawberry plants on my hands and knees, and spent a good deal of time last night bent over (NOT like that! :) ). Between that and the singular monster contraction, he seems to be hanging out LOT now, which Spinning Babies says is the ideal position for birth. Even better, I think I feel the pointy bit on the correct side, meaning his chin is probably tucked (my c-section was due to a brow presentation).

So we're set to go! Now here's hoping for a sudden start to active labor and a pi day baby! Ok, probably not gonna happen, but still, good position, let's go!

rosie. i was realy worried about a breach baby as well. i kept feeling pretty hard kicks at my cervix and light flutters under my ribs which i was sure were punches. she stays int he same position with a big hard lump (head or butt?) under my left rib i was sure it was her head.

went in to my doc appointment and he offered me a 3d ultrasound....so i said "yes please!" to try to figure out if baby was breach.

she was head down and settled, not going anywhere at 33 weeks, with her feet stretched out up by her head!!! flexible much? haha!  so you may have a head down baby with her feet still kicking you low. :)

by the end of the u/s she had put her feet back under my ribs....but its nice to know that all the cervix kicks are actualy kicks.

im sure you are fine. :)

Viviva  - That's crazy! I know they're super flexible little things, but to be kicking up by the head I thought was not feasible. Crazy. Thanks for sharing!

Ashley - I was thinking about all the babies born today who will be pi day babies. :) I have a friend whose birthday is today and I'm pretty sure she doesn't appreciate the nerdy loveliness of her birth date. :)

Vivica, that is crazy. Wow!

Rosie: We're nerds. Our kids will be nerds, they have NO choice in the matter. Just the other day Evie was building a bath for her Cthulu doll after talking about The Hobbit with me. She's such a nerd. Therefore my son should totally be born on pi day, right? (So definitely not in labor today, but baby is still LOT/LOA!)

I'm 99% sure my baby is head down, judging by the shape of my belly and the lovely bladder massages/lower pelvic pressure I get now and then. That and the feet pushing out on the sides and lack of a head feeling up by my ribs. But from what I can tell, he/she likes to switch between LOA and ROA at least once a day. Sometimes it even seems like he/she has gone back to posterior, which is where baby was hanging out until a week or so ago, when I had a major b-h session and baby seemed to move a bit lower and more anterior.

I've tried belly mapping but the position changes so much that it's really hard to tell what's where at any given time.  I suppose my having a long torso gives baby plenty of room to move around and switch positions. I'm only just about 34 weeks and I'm confident that in the end baby will be in the right position for her/him to come out (whatever that happens to be).

Vivica - sometimes I think my baby is also doing the feet stretched out low/middle kicks thing, I guess he/she isn't too squished up yet. Although I don't feel them where I think the head is, they're more over to the side.

Mainly I'm just starting to feel heavy in the belly and I can't believe I have another 3-6 weeks (at least) to get bigger and heavier. redface.gif  I'm starting to understand why some women ask to be induced early because they're just tired of being pregnant, although I'm not particularly uncomfortable yet...

I had a quick ultrasound today to verify baby is head down (I knew she was but they offered it, so I took it just to get a peek of her one last time). Just as I thought...she is head down AND posterior. I knew she was posterior because I don't feel her back and all her movements are up high and they feel like legs and feet only. Sometimes I can feel her butt when she is laying more on her side and not her back to my back.

Everything that you've been feeling, I  have been feeling too. I'm hoping that my little one is in the right position for labor!!!!

Yep, I don't feel any movements down low at all...can't feel the head because it's up against my tailbone with her back to my back and I can't feel any hand movements. All the movements are coming from her legs and feet. For awhile she seemed like she was lying sideways because she'd stretch her legs out and her butt would poke out the other side...but for the ultrasound, she was completely occupit posterior. I'm going to start doing the forward inversions from the spinningbabies.com website every day. I read on there that babies that turn from breech to vertex between 30-34 weeks, or after 31 weeks (now I can't remember, but something like that) they are more often posterior. That is exactly what she did. I think she didn't turn head down until about or almost 34 weeks. Hopefully by stretching my ligaments with the forward inversion technique will help her spin around!

When I saw my midwife on Thursday and she palpated my belly, baby was no longer posterior but actually in the best possible position for birth: LOA (Left Occiput Anterior) HOWEVER, down when you feel the low pelvis where the head should be...there is no head. You feel SHOULDERS. So, head must be curved back on my sacrum. But her butt is rammed up against my ribs and I do NOT have a short torso at all. Is my baby like 30 inches long, or what? She wants me to see a chiropractor and get adjusted, but I don't have the money to do so right now and I'm on state insurance that covers it with a proper referral, BUT they do not cover my midwife because she is a homebirth/birth center midwife, not a hospital medwife so they won't accept a referral from her. Hopefully baby figures this out on her own. Ugh.

Saudade: my babe was in a similar position for my last 3 visits. I'm 36 weeks now, have a mw appt on Weds, so we'll see if he's moved (I think he has). He's been LOA, but his head is very far back. Maybe the chin is tucked already? Do you get a lot of kicks to the right side? Just above your belly button?

Yep, all the feet kicks are on the right side up high and I feel legs sometimes across the top like where my fundus is and a big round butt on the left side under my ribs. She still goes kind of back and forth between LOA and posterior...sometimes I feel more little feet and leg movements up there and sometimes I can feel a definite back along the left side and butt up top with feet out my right side but her head is not in my pelvis. It's on my sacrum and I've been having a lot of pain there, too. I'm 37 weeks today.
