My dog is packing his bags!!!

Ok he's not but I swear to sweet backstabbing judas if he steps on my flooring while it's drying one more time!  I even used gates to keep him out but he found a way to get through and stomp around.  If he's not allowed to do something, he has to do it.  We used to keep a baby gate up between the dining room and front room to keep him out while we ate.  Other wise he'd theive off your plate while you're weren't looking.  Well, he figured if he stood on the back of the couch he could leap over the gate.  It was a pretty big distance and he'd usually crash into the dining room table and chairs... like that wasn't a noticeable noise!

I'm just fed up with him today.  He's 12 and physically going down hill but he's still a little jerk!  Yesterday he spent all day crying like he was in pain and the moment I would walk over to him he'd run into the kitchen and sit by the fridge.  There was chicken in there from the night before.  He did this so many times and DH thought there was something wrong with him.  He's manipulative!  I also just caught him hitting the cupboard doors on the island to get them to pop open so he can steal snacks!  He got a bag of tortilla chips and ran outside with them before I could catch him.

Alright just venting.  I now have to fix the flooring he messed up.  Another hour of fun ahead for me.  Oh and he just walked in, I swear he's gloating.  Like HA HA I got you and my bag of tortilla chips!

you need to teach him boundaries, how is he supposed to know baby gates are used to keep him out? As far as he is concerned its just a thing in the way of being with his humans. Dogs dont assume and they dont know what things are unless you teach it to him.

About the crying, he knows you are giving him attention for it, ignore it.

You're joking right?  I've had him for 12 yrs.  Baby gates have always kept him from things he's wanted unless he's figured out a way around it. He can open things most dogs can't.  He's part beagle and he does what he likes no matter what.  Usually he behaves but if it's obviously something he can't have or a space he's not allowed in, he'll do what he can to get to it or get in the space.  I actually belong to a beagle group and they all have these problems.  I have two beagles.  The older one is a nose guy and just does what his nose tells him to do.  He's never been mischievious.  The other has always been that way.  ALWAYS, yes he's had training.

And no I won't ignore it, he's very old.  He could actually be in some sort of discomfort.  It's 50/50 with him.  And I do believe dogs are extremely smart.  He follows commands and understand quite a bit.

I was just venting because he stomped all over new flooring.  He had a clear path to go where he wanted but he wanted to go the way that was gated off.  Once he got there he walked around then walked out the way he came in.  Walked around the gated area and to the place he wanted to go.

Sooooo sounds like something my big girl would do. I literally have never painted a wall without her rubbing against it at some point!

if a dog is behaving in a way you dont want him too, it is always the humans fault, and training is always the answer, there are different ways to train different types of dogs, I know people who have beagles who are extremely well trained. Training for dogs never stops, like us its a lifelong process. I have a hard to train dog too, it can be done.

There is also no need to get so defensive.

Does he need more exercise? I find if my dog has had a more active busy exercising day, she is better behaved at home, probably due to being tired! but it puts her in a better mood too, she's more likely to do as she's told.

He's a jealous dog.  Very very jealous.  If your attention is somewhere other than him he acts out.  He's also very spoiled.  He'll lay in front of his food bowl and cry until DH or the girls bring it to him.    It's annoying.  As far as exercise, yes he needs more but since he can't feel his back legs we've been instructed to exercise him very little.  Really sucks.
