How do I start potty training DS? 19 months too early?

My DS is 19 months and seems to want to start potty training.

I feel like hes ready to start but I dont know where to begin?

We have had it around the house since before he was 1 but just kind of put him on it here and there, nothing structured, he often pees on it with encouragment

For the last 2 days when ever he is naked in the house ( a couple hours a day) he will sit on it by him self and pee. He gets super excited, cheers and high fives everyone :) He almost always goes to it, I will remind him if he hasnt been in awhile.

And at night time he gets sooooo mad at me for putting his diaper on for bed...keeps telling me NOOOOO, POTTY MOMMA!!!!!!!!

So where do I go from here? I have no idea?

My mom says to stay home for a few days and really concentrate on it and he'll be fine to go out with out a diaper? Could it be that easy?

He really is very smart and picks things up very fast, he has lots of words and is great at communicating, he seems to do things a lot faster/ sooner than other babies of the same age ( at least the ones we know) so maybe we can do this?

Do any of you experienced potty training mommas have any tips for me??????????

Thanks in advance

I really like Diaper Free Before 3, which outlines a pretty traditional scheduled potty learning approach. Basically, it just becomes part of his daily routine, i.e. we sit on the potty when we wake up, after breakfast, before we leave the house, before nap etc. Every day. Training pants are useful. And potties everywhere.

Ditto the rec for Diaper Free Before Three.  Our favorite pottying book.  WIth both my kids we "started" by 19 months but only with occassional potty sits.  After they turned 2 we got serious (my ambition level being related to the sudden uptick in the amount of sleep I started getting around that age!).  DS is 27 months next week and doing excellent; he pretty much PT in 10 days over the Christmas break.  My DD was also in underwear full time during the day and night-trained herself before 2.5.  Considering that DS has started refusing to pee in his overnight diaper, I'm sending he'll be about the same schedule by the time we're done.  The real difference has been in motivation: DD was motivated because she hated to be wet so wet underwear was very motivating to her.  DS was motivated most after having a playdate with a little friend, who was PT at 25 months, and seeing her use the toilet.

I also like Diaper Free Before 3! I don't think its ever too early to offer the potty. :)

Wow! 19 months is young, but if he is showing the signs of readiness. I told mine that they weren't diapers, they were night-nights. After he masters potty training during the day, typically night time training follows.

All kids learn to go potty at different times, my oldest was 3 - my middle was 2, and honestly I'm hoping to start potty training my youngest soon. (she's one)

There is a site called potty training concepts and it has really good potty training tips!

Good luck!

Our 21 month old has been expressing an interest and we had four days at around 19 months when he pooped in the potty every day.  Then, he started refusing to sit on the potty and we just continued with diapers (cloth) then, yesterday he wanted to sit on the potty.  And, today he has sat on the potty three times, once in the am, once before going out to play and then once before nap.  He peed and pooped in the am, peed the second time and peed and pooped the third...

But, what I'm astonished by is that his diaper has stayed dry all day...

I'm shocked.

But, we are get out and go kind of folk--and I am really unsure how to handle potty learning outside of the house, or with babysitters (we have one tonight and then again tomorrow afternoon).  So, we'll see...but he is the one instigating this, so I feel a bit like I'm along for the ride.

My 21 month old son is very interested in the potty, and I feel like we could probably get him out of diapers except for the fact that his mother's day out program requires diapers for his class.  So until May, we can't really do it 100% of the time.  I'm very nervous about this whole process... seems like it'll be the messiest thing we've done yet :-/ lol

Thanks for all the advice and resourses!

DS has amazed me because for the last 6 days he has used the potty perfectly (with 1 accident) when we've been at home. He just has a top on and no bottoms. He must pee 20 times a day, he is so proud of him self ( but i now spend soooo much time helping him dump out his potty).

I love when hes playing and suddenly starts running yelling POTTY POTTY POTTY!!! so cute.

This is the same problem I am having:

We spend a lot of time out and about and I'm not sure how to handle it since he seems to pee every 20 min. And I have not tried having diapers off at nap time yet either, this week he has had (or started) his naps in the car so has had a diaper on.

I thankfully dont have the same problem with babysitters, he goes to a friends house once a week, and very proudly insisted on bringing it with him and they were happy to help, alough once he has no pants on he doesnt really need much help except to rinse it out.

I figure we'll just go with it and see what happens for now!
