I've been having trouble with getting protein during the workday, since I don't have access to a refrigerator (til April, when I go back to my normal work location) and even with icepacks, things only seem to stay cold for a few hours. And even if it's still safe, I am really grossed out by cold food that's heading toward room temp. I'm also having the issue of what I bring sounding terrible once I'm at work, which means throwing food away :( 

 

I was thinking that vegetarian jerky would be a good idea, since it's nonperishable and it's not full of sugars like most protein bars or high in fat like nuts. Unfortunately, the one with the most protein and lowest sodium (I'm trying to keep my intake in check) is Tofurky Jurky and it's only available online by the case - and what if i HATE it? I may try a couple other brands first to see if jerky is even something I'll eat.

It's illegal here too, but there is something called a "cow-share" program where you put money into owning a part of the milk cow, and you can consume raw milk if you own the cow. That's how people I know get around it.

Eluthia - Have you tried Larabars? They aren't super high in protein, though they have a decent amount, but I love them because they are bars that only have 2-4 ingredients each - usually dates, cashews, and something else. No perservatives, no other ingredients at all - and they taste fantastic! They have some fat, but since it's from nuts I think it's good fat, the kind that keeps you full and less likely to eat more out of turn.

 

Aimee - I've heard of cowshares! They sound both clever and hilarious at the same time! That is also illegal here in RI :(  I do have a certain amount of affection for my new state (just moved here 6 mos ago) but it is surprisingly conservative for liberal New England.

has anyone made their own protein bars? I feel like it could be better and much cheaper.. just need a good recipe..

ithappened, one of my friends just shared this with me a day ago: "Something I make for new moms are energy balls, which are just nut butter + protein powder + dried fruit, mixed to consistency so you can roll it into balls, and then rolled in coconut so they don't stick together in the fridge. you can customize them in 1000 ways depending on what is around, and having that quick punch of protein when you are constantly in-between things and starving is wonderful."

I like a few of the flavors, but I'm really looking for high protein/low sugar options, since I'm having a hard time getting enough protein, and I really have to try to limit my carb/sugar intake due to PCOS.
