What does it look like when a baby is interested in food?

DS watches us eat but doesn't make a grab for it or anything. I've offered him little tastes and he hasn't seemed excited. What should I be looking for? He's six months old and nearly triple his birth weight, so he's definitely not starving on breastmilk :)

My ds2 did two things. First he started seeing the food on our plates and wanting it. Even when he didn't know what it was, he wanted to copy us. I think this was all through 6ish - 12months. I would give him the food, but he just kind of smashed it, then moved onto something else.

When he was TRULY interested in food, he put the food to his mouth, tasted it, and tried again. If he didn't like it, he still tried again, only to discover he still didn't like it. smile.gif  That is when I started offering him oatmeal for breakfast (really clumpy so he could pick it up with his fist easily) and small snacks after nursing throughout the day. But he wasn't interested in food until 14-15months. He didn't actually *swallow* for a month after that.

So we had a late eater, but that is just to give you an idea of what it "looked" like. HTH.

DD will be six months on Tuesday and I am having to actively hold her back from my plate if she is sitting on my lap while I'm eating. I gave her some solids today and it was hit or miss. She took a bite of avocado, gave a huge shiver and spit it out. We're doing baby-led solids so she is responsible for putting the food in her mouth.

For us, it started with that obvious interest in food others around her were eating. That was maybe around 5 mos. After awhile, she would smack her lips and sometimes make little grunting noises - I'd say that was around 6 mos. I'm not sure right now if she ever grabbed at our food before we let her try her own solids. Once she started, she would only accept certain textures and temperatures at first. That gradually expanded, and now she can (theoretically) eat almost anything we eat (she's 14 mos.)

Honestly I found a lot of the interest in food was the same interest in wanting to touch & taste everything in their world - it wasn't specific to food.

With ds we started solids around 7 months. He liked food pretty well from the beginning but didn't really care that much until around 11 months. Before that if there was nothing appropriate for him to eat I would only nurse him & he didn't care. After that point if there was food around there was no way he was content with just bm.

This is very helpful! CherryBombMama, thanks for helping me feel better about my kid not "eating" at 6 months. I ground up some blueberries yesterday and gave them to him to squoosh; they were pretty much just a toy but much fun was had, and some went into his mouth, like all his toys.

Parenting is so much more fun than I had been led to expect! lol... everyone tells you how sleep-deprived you'll be, but somehow the FUN is not emphasized. :)

THANK YOU!!! I'm a single mom, and everyone said how hard it was going to be, how stressed I'd be, how tired I'd be. I'm doing just great! My baby is so much fun. People really need to lighten up, I think.

You're welcome! It was tough, everyone insisted he should be eating, but sometimes you've just got to go with your gut.

And blueberries sounded so good, I went and got some today thumb.gif

Yes, everyone tells you the horror stories. Why is that?!
