getting started again with 18mo

We never were "hard-core" ec'ers, but my son was fairly regularly using the potty for his first 6 months.  It was obvious he understood what the potty was for and how to go. Then he started resisting us, so we dropped it almost entirely- just a few catches here and there.  Now he is 18mo and showing interest in sitting on his potty and stories about the using the potty.  He will sit for a VERY long time - like almost an hour, while we read him stories.  But, nothing comes out, and shortly after the diaper is back on he goes.  Any tips for helping him to remember how?

Thanks!

You might get better response with conventional potty training, I'm totally guessing but I would try:

Offer first thing after wake ups.

If you get nothing,

Bring a basin of water to the potty for him to play with while he sits there. Lots of pouring.

If that doesn't work after a brief time,

Put him in undies or thin cotton pants and keep him with you in the kitchen or someplace that can get wet and just watch and wait. When you start to see wetness spread or hear the waterfall talk about it, name it and bring his attention to what's going on so he understand what you are looking for on the potty.

Keep it light and happy and if you have to resort to the undies a few times try gently interrupting him  midstream and catching part in the potty.

Good luck.

We took 3 months "off" so to speak, more or less, from 8 months to 11 months before resuming EC and this is how we re-introduced pee goes in potty to DD. Very successful, simple, no stress.
