Laws?

I'm interested in homeschooling my two kids when the time comes, and we're a state that allows homeschooling and all that jazz... but my problem is that my husbands step-mom is our landlord, and disagrees with homeschooling. She said we can't homeschool if we're living in this condo. Does a landlord have that weight?

Nope.

I'm assuming that your in AK since it's in your handle and on your profile. Alaska allows homeschooling with or without any official support and you do not have to register with the state or school board in any way unless you want to.

Your landlord absolutely can not restrict how you do or don't educate your children. It is none of her business if they attend HSing, privet, public, or other schooling. And SHE would absolutely be violating the law if she discriminated against you based on your educational and parenting choices.

While I agree she gets no say legally, depending on the laws in your state, she may be able to evict you "without cause". Certain factors are protected under rental laws (race everywhere, religion and age most places I think--but it ultimately varies by state, county and even city). I certainly wouldn't let that influence your decision though because if your MIL would kick you out of your house for homeschooling then you've got bigger longer term problems. Time to set some boundaries with her and remind her that threatening to evict her grandchildren is morally reprehensible. Further if she continues to interfere with your parenting decisions she needs to understand there are long term consequences. Shameful behavior on her part.

Sorry mama. Hugs!

My parents left in the middle of the night and moved five states away to the OTHER mil's neck of the woods before I was born over a similar level of interference from my mom's mother.  :)

No the landlord has no say in how you raise your children.  However my parenting decisions have helped me find some much needed boundaries with my parents over the past 11 years. (read that however you want to).

OP- every state allows homeschooling.
