Quilters?

I'm pretty much a hack sewer, but I've been making a quilt/blanket for each of my kids and (thankfully) progressively getting better at it. I wouldn't even share a picture of the first 3 I made. eyesroll.gif  The next one was a "quilt in a box" sort of thing, it turned out fine but there wasn't much "creative process" in it.

Here's DD2's quilt, the first "real" quilt that I've done from start to finish:

PICT0002.jpg

(It wasn't bound yet in this picture).

It was SO fun!! So I'm excited to make one for this baby as well. DD's wasn't finished until she was 1 year old (I didn't start it until well after she was born) but I want to make this one pre-baby. Since we don't know gender (although really leaning toward boy), I'm trying to make it both gender-neutral AND very different from DD's.

This is the pattern I ordered and this is the fabric. I big puffy heart love this fabric!!!!

I know it's marketed as "boy" fabric, but all my kids, boys and girls, LOVE being outside, collecting critters, climbing trees, etc. In fact, my oldest DD (13) is totally into insects right now and currently wants to be an entimologist. So boy or girl, I think this will be great fabric.  I'm so excited to start!!

I would LOVE to see anyone else's quilts and maybe have a quilting thread for a) accountability b) sharing progress and c) helping newbies like me with questions and problems.  =]

Cute stuff!

I love it. I have not really quilted. I made Juniper a blanket, it was rectangle's with the hemmed edges showing.  When I started sewing it we didn't know boy girl so one side was pink and orange floral and the other was blue and green floral. So this will  be the first actual quilt.I have no idea what I am doing. Winging it, as I do with most of my sewing projects

Oh oh, me me!!!! I LOVE quilting!!! And fabric shopping.....~drool~ It's a bit of an obsession for me:)

Here are the quilts I've done...not many but a few...

A rag quilt for DS2~

My very first "top quilted" quilt(this is before it was quilted) for a good friend of mine. She was getting married and had expressed a love of quilts but had never recieved one:) I adore the colours~

This is for DS2 as well~ He seems to be really interested in my sewing and has asked for awhile for a pirate quilt so this was his third Bday present:)

IMG_0854.JPG

And this is the biggest most intricate quilt I've made- for my mother:) I top quilted every strip in a different pattern and it's free handed as well. It took me MANY hours to make but she loves it:) I made a few matching pillows for her bed as well.

Honey~ That quilt is gorgeous! I love the Amy Butler fabrics:) You did a really great job with colours and I think it looks fantastic!! Oh and your new quilt fabrics are AWESOME! I want to make my littlest boy a quilt as he's not received one from me yet and I hope you don't care...but I think I'm going to make him something from this line. It's just perfect!

I have a quilting wish list of fabrics too...maybe we could share and drool over that too! LOL I also have a huge stash that needs to be petted...and used! I'm going to make this baby a quilt before it comes and I've chosen this pattern~

http://thebuttonbush.com/simplycharming.php     You have to scroll down to "Candy Hearts". I just love the vintage/shabby-chic look:) I'm still looking for charm packs but there are a few that stand out. I'll post once I decide!

Have you all seen this site? I'm guessing yes....but what the heck. The patterns are all free and GORGEOUS! Check it out!

http://www.modabakeshop.com/search/label/Quilt      Just scroll down and keep looking at the older posts....there are pages and pages of patterns:)

You are really talented... I am so impressed!

Wow Tulafina, that's pretty amazing.

Everyone else's is gorgeous too. I'm avoiding quilting because the last thing i need is yet another expensive hobby (sewing, knitting & crochet, spinning, beading).

Thank you:) It is expensive! I don't make big quilts very often...not just because it takes me months to complete...but because it hundreds of dollars for each quilt! Eek! If my hubby knew...he'd kill me! LOL I also spin, crochet and sew and it's more than enough to empty the pocket book quickly if I'm not careful.

It is terribly expensive, but I also view it as an heirloom item that is pretty priceless! DH gets his electronics and tools and whatnot, and I get fabric, lol.

Have you decided on your fabric yet? I love the Candy Hearts pattern! Are the hearts just sewn on and left with raw edges? I love that look! There's a raw-edge circle quilt tutorial out there that has the same kind of look that I'd like to do for my boy's bed at some point. Simple, too.  =]

Melissa - It'll be the Candy Hearts:) I've decided on the fabric too!!! I'll go find it and link to it. It's not available to order yet...so I'm (not so) patiently waiting!!! It does have 2 hearts on top of each other with raw edges:) I love the shabby/chic look. When do you start your bugs quilt??? orngbiggrin.gif

I've got all the pieces cut out and am working on sewing squares!! So fun. I had to wait for that fabric to come out too, so I feel your pain, lol. Can't wait to see your fabric!

Flavour- how about this pattern? I love it. Just one Jelly roll, it's simple but I love the outer strips down the length of the quilt. It's very pretty:)

Julie, teach me how to spin!!! I have a wheel, and wool, but have no idea where to start.  Please, be my sensei!

Here's a great tutorial on a circle quilt: http://www.cluckclucksew.com/2009/12/raw-edge-circle-quilt-tutorial.html

Also, I made this one in the spring (okay, it's pieced, but not quilted) and it's super cute: http://www.allpeoplequilt.com/images/img_QAM-sum10-COlg_ss10.jpg

I'm desperately trying not to spend too much on yarn and fabric, but it's so hard.  Luckily I've had a lot of custom orders for knitted baby stuff lately, which means I cover the cost of yarn, and often have enough left over to make something for baby.

I LOVE the Sunny Lush (but I have a thing for orange ;) ) and I think the Poetica is super awesome too. The Sunny is more bright, cheery, etc and the Poetica is more muted and sophisticated... depends on the look you're going for.  I love Pat Bravo's fabrics!

Tulafina, I like the sweet lush and the god luck bundles! I can quilt, but don't very often. I have an unfinished quilt top, and would like to make one for the baby eventually, but plan to wait till after the granny square afghan is done.

My fabric came in! Now I just have to get started!  Question, what color thread would you use for this quilt? Sorry, complete newbie here and the only people I would be able to ask around here are also going to be trying to sell me stuff.

Lovely!! Maybe a blue/green thread? It depends on if you want it to really blend in or show a little bit. Some quilters change thread as they quilt, I think.  What's the name of this fabric?
